Pluskylang Great Film overall
Numerootno A story that's too fascinating to pass by...
Hattie I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
Rexanne It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
Katherine_7 ...you did such a horrible thing. These so called writers just scrolled through The Beatles discography, on drugs, while watching "Hair" and had an idea of making a movie based on these things, but it just went terribly wrong. 1. Everything literally revolves around the songs. "Who minds the plot, the plot is the song and follow it! We are gonna make small meaningful scenes inspired and based on these particular songs, because I like 'em and just mash all the scenes together. While we are at it, I liked that song...what was it called? Pewdence, Paddence, PRUDENCE! Let's add a completely random character and call her Prudence. Hell, make her a lesbian too! I like Sexy Sadie too. Add a girl named Sadie, make her a MILF. One of these better make an appearance through the bathroom window (Get it? Like in the song!) cause I like that song too. Also, main character, gotta name him Jude. So when we get around the end of the movie (when the boy realizes he wants to go after the girl he loves), we can put "Hey Jude" right there. That "You were meant to go out and get her" part gonna hit them hard. Powerful stuff ey?"2. I'm a HUGE Beatles fan. I was raised with all these songs, but this was abysmal. From the musical arrangement to the autotunish, horrible, unhuman-like singing. Only descent singers were Martin Luther and Dana Fuchs. Why make the actors sing if they can't sing, just do a voice-over. Or, if it has to be the actors who do the singing, well, hire ones that can sing damn it! This sounded like hippy High School Musical. If you want a musical anti-war drama, go watch Hair. If you want a movie with songs of The Beatles, just then go watch a Beatles movie.
Kirpianuscus a precious musical. for rich cultural references, for performances, for the trip in the heart of things, for special poetry, for the flavor of classics and for lovely simplicity. a love story. like many others. but special because it is in middle of a kind of magic, doing you nostalgic and dreamer and part of a colorful show. a film about Vietnam and beat generation and looking for real happiness. all - as a spell. so, a fireworks show. not great, maybe. but seductive at whole.and this, maybe, for me, as admirer of Jim Sturgess, it could be the purpose. a return to a form of pure joy , old and refreshing, to the musical who gives fresh air and a lot of hope.
mpescajeda Maybe the big screen experience was needed, but I doubt it as I saw this loathsome waste of film on late-night television recently and was aghast. What movie exec. green-lighted this terrible, relentless onslaught of bad musical renditions of Beatle music and the eyesore ramble of images that escorted them? I'd be surprised to learn he/she is still around as the movie has only made back roughly half of its shooting budget as of this writing (going by IMDb's stats). I wouldn't know where to start in criticizing this mess- it's all that bad! And U2's Bono took an ill-advised role that's still leaving me scratching my head. I thought he was a thinking man's artist. All in all, this film makes me pine away for another viewing of 1978's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and cry out for a remake.
Pozdnyshev I was brought along to see this with some relatives. They had drank the Kool-Aid, like most people had at the time, that there was something necessarily interesting or profound about a garish vehicle for a musical based on a bunch of Beatles covers. The movie itself was, ehh, it more or less succeeded in what it set out to do. I mean, it really wasn't a terrible movie; the cover songs were decent, the acting was okay, and the choreography and photography and art direction all paints a superficially believable picture of some young guy's coming-of-age experience hitch-hiking around the late-60's UK.The key word is "superficial," though. It's all fake as hell beneath its cutesy candy coating. There's barely any sense that we're getting to know any of the characters. Every situation is just a contrived backdrop for another Beatles cover done by what sounds like an endless line of 90s alternative rock has-beens who impart a sedate, simplified feel to the classic songs. The ending of the movie is worse than just the sterile sum of its parts though. It's actually sad in a way I'm not sure the filmmakers intended: the poor guy who was at the forefront of this epic musical journey ends up doing what? Working in a damned factory the rest of his life! I got the strong impression that we are to understand that what we saw him experience will be by far the most interesting thing that happens to him in his entire life, while everyone else seems to continue with their little adventures.
