Bear Cub Audience Reviews

Moustroll Good movie but grossly overrated
StyleSk8r At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Usamah Harvey The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
Erica Derrick By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
nitro2038 I saw this on TV last night by accident. The opening scenes showing 'bears' having sex was surprising. I really appreciated seeing manly men for once instead of the usual pretty boys. I didn't find them attractive, but that wasn't the point (although Pedro is rather cute). But of course this film is much more than the few sex scenes. I was really hooked into the story. The gay Uncle left to look after his hippy sister's son. I really ended up liking Pedro a lot. Though for some reason I felt he was a lonely character really, despite his nephew and fantastic friends. Previous comments have already gone into more detail about this movie, so I really just want to say that I loved it and highly recommend you see it.
Bryan Hargrave Having just finished "Cachorro", I'm left with goosebumps. There is no way a movie of this depth could have been made in America. The reason being that homosexuality isn't vilified or degraded, and actually shows gay men caring about each other.***Spoilers ahead*** The plot centers around a gay man, Pedro, and HIV positive dentist, who is left in charge with his 9 year old nephew, Bernardo, while his widowed sister heads of to India for a 'vacation'. Instead, she is jailed for drug trafficking and Pedro is put into a precarious situation. He's grown close to his nephew, and has to deal with an estranged grandmother who it seems will stop at nothing to gain custody of the grandchild she never knew.I can't comment on the edited theatrical release, but the DVD release treats gay sexuality in a pretty straightforward manner, no pun intended. There are sex scenes, but they're not out of line with what I'd expect from progressive European cinema. We are instead treated to a closely knit social group who rally behind Pedro and Bernardo. The movie ends neatly with a few surprises that I will not reveal here. There is a strong message of family throughout the movie. We see it in the relationship between Pedro and Bernardo, as well as with the other outstanding cast members. I must say that I was a bit taken aback by the casual drug use in the movie. It's just not my scene, but we do see Pedro move away from them throughout the film. All in all, a wonderful effort by writer/director Miguel Albaladejo. The principal cast is terrific here, led by Jose Luis Garcia Perez as Pedro and David Castillo as Bernardo. What a treat! Recommended!
moonspinner55 "Bear Cub" isn't really a comedy or a drama, it's a gay fantasy with a bit of reality thrown in for balance. Director and co-writer Miguel Albaladejo opens the film with a very sexy lovemaking scene between two woofy chubs, but he quickly and quietly moves on (it turns out the sex at the beginning is between two secondary characters whom we never get to know, being used somewhat as comedic subtext). Pedro, a 30-ish gay dentist in Madrid, Spain, takes in his young nephew after the boy's mother is jailed in India, leading to complications between the dentist (who leads a promiscuous sex life) and the child's unyielding grandma. We get a small glimpse of Pedro's gay life (cruising the bars and parks, partying with his husky, furry friends), yet not enough to give us insight into this man--whose health woes are facetiously dropped in. The film is a major step forward in showcasing gay lives which are not so wildly colorful, but the situation with the kid is only a serviceable plot function and is never quite as involving as the adult passion. **1/2 from ****
A A I loved this movie. Finally I had the chance to see it in Italy, in a small-scale gay film festival. Spanish uncut version with English subtitles. The actors were brilliant, the story intriguing (even though I would not have mentioned AIDS, just to avoid the usual cheap match gay-aids).There is so much need of movies like this, to make straight people understand that gay people are not only glitter, and, eventually, discreet people are the vast majority. Thanks for making this movie, and I hope many other directors will shoot something close to this. Ciao from Roma, AA
