Boyz n the Hood Audience Reviews

Doomtomylo a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
Allison Davies The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Rosie Searle It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
Cheryl A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
ladyman-47324 Watching this movie, you understand why John SIngleton had to make it, and you're glad he did. Unpretentious, unflashy, just real. Doesn't have to create a lot of fake drama to get you interested, just shows the truth of difficult circumstances. The performances are great - Cuba is as good in this as in Jerry Maguire.
classicsoncall What I found inspiring about the story was it's message, largely implied by Laurence Fishburne's character, that the way out of the ghetto was for people to take charge of their own lives and improve themselves via education and taking personal responsibility. The dichotomy of street life is represented by Tre Styles (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and Ricky Baker (Morris Chestnut), who make an effort to improve their situation in life, against the gang-banger mentality of young blacks like Doughboy Darren (Ice Cube) and Dooky (Dedrick D. Gobert), who engage in an eye for an eye existence in relation to the street gangs that roam South Central Los Angeles. Particular emphasis is placed on the idea of young black kids needing a father, or at least a father figure in their lives to teach them right from wrong in matters of education, job skills and even the responsibility that goes along with pre-marital sex. The dialog between Furious and his son is particularly frank and well intentioned, making this picture appear to be worthy viewing for all inner city high school students. I found the movie to be sensitive and thought provoking, with only some mild disappointment with the closing screen narrative that described the fate of Doughboy two weeks after the tragic death of Ricky. As a fictional story, I didn't find it necessary to sensationalize the drama of yet another young man's death in service to the movie, as there was enough to contemplate regarding the tragedy that had just recently occurred.
nadrojh Boyz N the Hood is a very good drama about surviving a bad environment and choices we make. Now I have no personal connection to the movie as far as where or how I was raised. However I did find it to be a very well directed and written story. The movie comes off authentic. John Singleton did a wonderful job on the script showing the many different elements, characters, and story lines. I also like that he spent time showing the characters young growing up in the environment and older growing up in the environment. It has wonderful cast with wonderful performances by Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Angela Bassett, Morris Chestnut, and incredible performance by Lawrence Fishburn. I have seen Boyz N the Hood several times over the years and find it to be very deep and meaningful each time. John Singleton said in the commentary of the movie that this was the most personal movie, and it shows. It is one of his best movies. It is a very good drama.
Cameronius Explodius McMonius Boyz n the Hood was released in 1991 and was directed by John Singleton. The movie is about three young men, Tre, Doughboy and Ricky who are trying to cope with the dangerous society that they live in and find a way to overcome it. One thing I loved about this film was how honest it was. It wasn't afraid to display the reality of situations which were indeed happening in real life. I think a reason it was so realistic was the fact that much of it was based off the director's own life. Speaking of the director, this was his debut film and to say this was his first he did a great job. He was also the youngest person ever to be nominated for an Academy Award at the time too. All of the cast gave great performances, the one who surprised me the most was Ice Cube. If you knew that Ice Cube was in the movie and your reaction was "That isn't going to work any day", then I take it you've only seen the Ride Along movies. I was surprised by how sincere his character and acting was and I think the conflicts he had to face with the N.W.A and the police in the past added to his character as his character is someone who has had many run-ins with the police in the past. Another performance I was surprised by was Laurence Fisburne as the main character Tre's (Cuba Gooding Jr.) father. He displayed the qualities of a good father and someone who managed to connect with the character of Tre in multiple situations. It's probably my personal favourite performance of his that I've seen. Like I mentioned earlier, this movie wasn't afraid to display the truth and it did it well, with many emotionally intense scenes and also many surprisingly relatable ones too. It displayed perfectly the difficulty of life for everyone living there and you felt for their characters. It also provides a good message of the right way to fight back against all of these bad things. I believe that the themes of this movie will likely stay relevant for quite a while and they can be applicable to just about anyone too and this is the reason why I think that this movie will remain important for many years to come. No wonder it's apart of the Sony Classics Collection. Overall, this was a much deeper film than I expected to see that wasn't afraid to show the realism of situations that were also going on in the real world and carried across a good and moving message. I would highly recommend this film. 8.2/10
