Brighton Rock Audience Reviews

Pluskylang Great Film overall
ChicRawIdol A brilliant film that helped define a genre
Kailansorac Clever, believable, and super fun to watch. It totally has replay value.
Salubfoto It's an amazing and heartbreaking story.
ernesti It appears that this film divides as people seem to hate it because it's a remake or you just love it like me who had never seen the original film before. I thought that this film is a return to the old ways of making films with style and good score. It's got that classical style in it and it appears that the makers have really put an effort in studying the old films. The music is used like they did in the old "gialli" films. That's just a perfect way to get me hooked completely even if the film wasn't that good. This movie is better than good and i can recommend it to those who prefer slower pace in films and perfect acting and good script.
punishmentpark It's been a while since I saw 'Brighton rock' from 1947, but it was a lot better than this attempt to recreate a book for the screen. The acting may be strong in itself, but the drama and crime aspects never come together. One example is the scene where Pinkie takes Spicer on his last ride (or at least it is supposed to be) to the beach under the pier: the beautiful images of Brighton, its streets and dozens of mopeds (I'm not sure they're called that) are promising, but it hardly works, especially when Pinkie finds a little time to kneel down and pray(!) on the run from a couple of serious hard men. The ending has that same problem, it's over the top in its gestures, but there is no dramatic impact to match it.The locations, settings and costumes are pretty great, and the cast try their best, but it is all to very little avail.4 out of 10.
rbrb This is a dark, intense 'film noir' type drama. The backdrop to it is Brighton, England of the 1960's with rebelling youth(mods and rockers). The actual story is about a young murderous psychopath thug involved in a gang war. A gullible waitress unwittingly becomes a witness to murder and the thug needs to deal with it.The movie is atmospheric and grim. No hint of much happiness nor any likable characters.Everyone in the movie is flawed in one way or another. Maybe that is why many people did not rate this movie highly. There is a religious and moral agenda in this picture which if recognized may disturb some viewers.I thought all the main actors gave edgy and compelling performances. The 2 leads namely Sam Riley and Andrea Riseborough are outstanding with on balance the latter stealing the show. The very last scene in the film is brilliant and thought provoking.7/10
Kenneth Hobbs This picture was beautifully photographed, acted brilliantly - it was atmospheric and Pinkie - Sam Riley gave a 'haunting' performance.Brighton in the 60's was portrayed very well and I loved the pseudo Quadrophenia angle to it - well done for that. The cliff scenes, were not as one reviewer from the US related to as Dover, were filmed at the Seven Sisters - Sussex own cliffs - the scenes were literally breath taking. My only criticism of the film was in the continuity - Brighton to Eastbourne -the final scene - wasn't minutes away - it is quite a drive especially on the A259, would have taken a drive of some 45 minutes in the 60's Overall view - this film warranted 9/10 for me - No remake equals the original and 2010 Brighton Rock is no exception - but then the makers never intended it to be a remake of the original, otherwise it would have been set in the late 40's and not 60's Well done!!!
