Don Juan DeMarco Audience Reviews

BootDigest Such a frustrating disappointment
FuzzyTagz If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
InformationRap This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
Adeel Hail Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.
Smoreni Zmaj First time I ever went to movies with my first girlfriend, first encounter with Johnny Depp and forever one of my favorite movies.9/10Character is based on Lord Byron's Don Huan, movie is produced by Francis Ford Coppola, Michael Kamen was in charge of music, main song is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, and with such geniuses as Johnny Depp, Faye Dunaway and, one of the best actors of all times, Marlon Brando in leading roles, movie is simply perfect. In my opinion, essence of this movie, and also essence of life itself, is perfectly described in one of the last sentences of this movie: "Why not..."
Armand for the art to remember the flavor of old romance. for the crumbs of fairy tale. and for the special result of meeting between Brando and Depp. a film who wakes-up memories, emotions and joy to discover another side of life. not pink or sweet but so realistic, crazy and nice than must represent more than fiction. a movie like a cure. strange, soft, almost chaotic but charming for the power to build not only sand castles, to rebirth an old fashion myth but for the smart use of clichés. a film about freedom and force of dream more than about love. a show. but not a common one. only chance to watch a wise advice from a talented director. sure, it is not a great movie. maybe, it is not a good one. it is only remarkable. and not only for its inspired music.
Desertman84 Don Juan DeMarco is a romantic comedy starring Johnny Depp as John Arnold DeMarco, a man who believes himself to be Don Juan, the greatest lover in the world. Clad in a cape and domino mask, DeMarco undergoes psychiatric treatment with Marlon Brando's character, Dr. Jack Mickler, to cure him of his apparent delusion. But the psychiatric sessions have an unexpected effect on the psychiatric staff, some of whom find themselves inspired by DeMarco's delusion; the most profoundly affected is Dr. Mickler himself, who rekindles the romance in his complacent marriage. The movie also stars Faye Dunaway. The movie is based on two different sources: the modern-day story is based on director/screenwriter Jeremy Leven's short story Don Juan DeMarco and the Centerfold and the familiar legend of Don Juan, wherein flashbacks depicting DeMarco's back-story are based on.In the movie,a psychiatrist treats a most unusual patient, only to find that the doctor is the one who gains the most from their sessions. A young man in a mask and cape is standing atop a billboard, threatening to jump. When the potential suicide is finally talked down, he's brought to a psychiatric facility where after one doctor washes his hands of the case, he's placed under the supervision of Dr. Jack Mickler, an aging psychiatrist soon to retire. The patient informs Mickler that he is actually the great lover Don Juan, who has seduced over 1,500 women, but has fallen into a deep depression after being unable to win the hand of the woman of his dreams. Mickler has ten days to work with his patient and after which he will either be released on medication or committed to a long-term stay in a mental hospital. As Mickler talks with the young man, who speaks rapturously of the art of love, the doctor finds that his philosophies are helping to kick start his failing relationship with his wife, and he slowly becomes convinced that his patient might really be Don Juan after all.Walking a fine line between precious comedy, wistful drama, and delicate fantasy, it gets a big dose of charm from its esteemed cast, with Johnny Depp delivering dialogue that would have sounded ludicrous from a lesser actor. While the performances by Marlon Brando and Faye Dunaway elevate this likable comedy about love, illusion and delusion way above its inconsequential text. This may not be a great movie, but it is guaranteed to put you in an amorous mood.
mlzema I recently watched this one again after having not seen it in quite a while and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was still one of the sweetest little movies I have ever seen, and for a person of my cynical nature that is really saying something. One of the secrets of this movie is the casting of Brando and Depp, two actors whom I consider to be "blank slates" and are thus quite adept at falling into and being believable in whatever role is given to them. I thought Brando in particular was sublime as the about-to-retire psychiatrist who appears to be rudderless regarding his impending life of retirement. Johnny Depp's character has some really beautifully-written lines, most of which are quoted on this site, from which we as men and husbands could learn a thing or two. Yes, it's plot is totally implausible but I'm begging you to buy in to the premise and let yourself get lost for a little while. I promise you that you will be holding your wife's hand almost before you know it!
