Linkshoch Wonderful Movie
Ensofter Overrated and overhyped
Rexanne It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny
Scarlet The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
leplatypus Sure this one hasn't a fighting / military content but there's a lot of closeness as well: the period, the trips to Japan, the discovery of a another world and also an another love. Likewise, the Japanese way of life is depicted with full of poetry and Yakamoto's soundtracks recalls Zimmer's one. Keira plays the devoted young wife waiting patiently for her husband to come back from his endless trips. So we don't see her often and honestly, if the first trip is interesting, watching the others was tiring and totally repetitive! If « last samurai » moved me deeply with this simple life, here i was quickly bored as the cast isn't great and the hollow missions takes places in winter ! The only connection I had was to marvel about those Japanese wood houses because if the technology is simple, their design is much more complex than our poor cabin and prefigure the mind of this people for electronic.
J-bot6 Excellent cinematography and fine performances. This is the first time I've seen Keira Knightley turn in such a subtle and faceted performance. It suits her well.Other reviewers complained about things like lack of subtitles for the Japanese dialogue, lack of emotion in the performances, lack of believability in the infatuation that takes place in Japan, and complaints that the film was 'too slow'.First: The Japanese dialogue didn't require subtitles. An observant viewer could figure out what's going on easily enough.Second: This is one of the few films out there that actually dialed-down the tendency to over-act scenes. For this reason, it's a more realistic portrayal of human beings. I'm noticing a definite increase in the number of people out there that can't seem to identify subtle emotions. Not sure what's up with that. It's a disturbing trend.Third: Clearly people who don't believe the in-Japan romance portion of this film have never experienced love at first sight (or maybe they're inexperienced in relationships).Fourth: Complaints of this genre of film being too slow are ridiculous. My advice for people who have this complaint is to stick to action films (or practise observing and acknowledging visual information). Maybe take up hiking or an art class. That might help.In summary, if you have a sophisticated eye for film and are mature enough in areas of romance (failed or otherwise), this is a film that you'll likely appreciate.
GoldmundX This movie tries to be an epic, period piece romantic drama. It has some of the main ingredients that are required to pull this off. There's costumes, travels, some beautiful (that's the only reason I gave it a 2/10) landscape shots, a guy, women, a not-too-subtle score to pull big emotions from us, all are present. But the most important ingredient they forgot: there's no heart. There's no passion. There's no chemistry at all. They even didn't take time to develop the Love between the main characters. Guy sees girl in bar (2 seconds). Then they walk past some flowers. Girl likes flowers. Guy eats a flower. They are in love. Sadly, I do not make this up. It is this shallow. And this is supposed to be the base for the rest of the movie. Well, it's just completely unbelievable. The dialogues are cheesy clichés and completely uninspired ("I will always love you" every time the guy goes on a trip; 4 times?), the acting is borderline amateuristic. Watching a movie can be a wonderful experience, it can draw you in, it can get under your skin, can touch something deep inside. This movie wants to be/ do all of that, but it fails completely. Bad movie making. A waste of time.
malarea3 OK...personally i think that this movie was a bit boring..i admit that there was a beautiful scenery , a well made music score ..but are those 2 factors the key to success? well i think not.. the acting from the leading actor was horrible..i don't know if it was him or his acting that made me feel an apathy towards the character that he was representing... another disadvantage was the countless dialogs in Japanese..there were no subtitles for us to read..so what are we supposed to do on those scenes? just listen and try to guess what are they saying?No... and what i think about the mysterious love of the leading actor and the Japanese girl? well..i have a question about that..how did those 2 people fell in love without having spoken to each other in the entire movie? overall ..i'm not very satisfied with this movie at all..there are loads of masterpieces out in the market...so why should we watch this movie?? anyway..i will not prevent anyone from watching this because i think that it's not right..i believe that everyone is capable of creating a different opinion...and after all that is the magic of every single movie..everyone perceives it in his/her own unique way !!
