The Kids Are All Right Audience Reviews

AniInterview Sorry, this movie sucks
Micitype Pretty Good
Jonah Abbott There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
Philippa All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
Thomas Drufke Sometimes films feel like they are purely made for awards consideration without much depth or flare to them. The Kids Are All Right is a perfectly fine film, without a major flaw, but I didn't find anything beneath the surface of this film to deserve any extra recognition. The film is about marriage, and the things that bind and break one. Perhaps it's just the fact that I couldn't find any sort of connection to these characters. Sometimes that's all it takes to enjoy a film.Mark Ruffalo, Annette Bening, and Julianne Moore are at the center of this story dealing with a lesbian couple and their sperm donor who suddenly becomes a part of their day to day lives as their daughter reaches out to him. It's smart, well acted, and mostly funny film about family, but it never breaks new ground or develops into a memorable story. In fact, once the film moves on from being about the children and more about the 3 adults, it becomes far less interesting. Which for me is where the film lost most of its steam, and never seemed to recover.6.0/10
gbkmmaurstad Nic is an OBGYN, (Annette Bening) married to Jules, (Julianne Moore) a stay at home wife flirting with starting a landscape business. Both of the women have given birth to a child provided by the same sperm donor. Underage son Laser, (Josh Hutcherson) wants to know more about his biological father and convinces his 18 year old sister to find out who their father is.Unbeknownst to Nic and Jules, the brother and sister meet their biological Dad (Mark Ruffalo) and being seeing him. Eventually the two Moms find out and decide they should all get to know each other a little better. This is where I think the film falls a bit short, great actors, good script idea, but the ending was a bit to Pollyanna. Still, it does bring up some interesting thoughts and if you like Bening, Moore, or Ruffalo it's still worth the watch.
Screen_Blitz In this heartwarming comedy-drama directed by Lisa Cholodenko, Annette Bening and Julianne Moore play Nic and Jules, a lesbian couple living in the California suburbs. Dealing with typical issues of same-sex marriage, Jules is struggling trying to balance her life between raising a landscaping and being a home mother to her children Joni (played Mia Wasikowska) and Laser (played by Josh Hutcherson). Her daughter Joni is 18, has recently graduated high school as valedictorian, and is heading off to college soon. Her son Laser is 15, a kind, but rebellious teenager who hangs out with his troublemaker friend Clay (played by Eddie Hassell) who Nic and Jules don't approve of. Being conceived through artificial insemination, Laser has grown up wondering who is biological father is. One night, he asks Joni to call the sperm bank to get in touch with their father since he's not old enough. Upon meeting him, their father happens to be Paul (played by Mark Ruffalo). Laser and Joni decide to bring home to their house to meet their parents. Before too long, Paul steps into their lives and grows close to the children. However, his presence soon leads to struggle in Nic and Jules' marriage. This film is something utterly charming and heartwarming, boasts some splendid performances by a great cast, and tackles on important subjects including family relationships and same-sex marriage. There is Julianne Moore and Annette Bening who is charming and magnificent in their roles, and their performances shine like gold here. They are both really funny, and at times, really genuine in their performances. Then there is Mark Ruffalo who gives it his best in his role as the children's father, arguably the best performance in his career. And let's not forget Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson who are very grounded in their roles. These are some the last child actors I would expect to see take on such mature roles. Watching the cast on screen is nothing short of amazing and heartwarming. Director Lisa Cholodenko treats this film with a genuine take on topics such as family relationships and same-sex marriage. The story deals with a couple who feel their marriage threatened by a man they nothing about other than their being the sperm donor when the children introduce him to the family. With the cogent screenplay by Cholodenko, this film handles these subjects with diligence and maturity, and out of the bright light comes a positive message about what being a family is all about. Then there are also some discussions of homosexuality that are put into question, while at the same time, trigger a few laughs here and there. There are laughs and there are tears, all of them work like a charm. The Kids Are All Right is a wonderful movie that everyone is encouraged, but only until there are older or at least mature on discuss the subject matter. This film teaches a lot about family values and the functions of relationships in family.
Psycane It is not hard to notice when something you were very much anticipating disappoints. But it is great when it is everything you hope. Especially if it is even more so. This is a fantastic film in all ways. Julianne Moore, Annete Benning, Mark Ruffalo as well as the younger actors were all excellent and definitely understood there respective characters. The film was written very well, challenging the ideas of certain families and what family is as well as relationships. Comedic Dramas can either succeed fabulously or fail miserably. I am happy to say that I both laughed and teared up during this film. The end wrapped up the story very well and certainly captures what the film had been saying up to that point and was setting up. The film surprised me in many ways and certain scenes that happened. I knew as much as the basic plot and who was in it and, honestly, if you went into this movie knowing nothing, that is the best way to experience. Superbly directed, this independent picture had everyone working on it passionate about the project and it shows.
