PARIS– Paula van der Oest’s “Tonio” is set to represent the Netherlands in the foreign-language Oscar race.
Following “Accused” and “Zus & Zo,” “Tonio” is the third film by Paula van der Oest to be selected by the Dutch committee to compete for an Oscar nomination.
Based on a popular Dutch novel and penned by Hugo Heinen,” Tonio” tells the true story of the tragic accident that killed the writer’s only son, Tonio van der Heijden, at age 21. The film, which depicts the grief endured by Tonio’s parents, was produced by NL Film production with NTR, Zilvermeer Productions and Nanook Entertainment.
The original novel won the Libris Prize and has so far sold over 200,000 copies around the world.
Nominations in all categories for the Academy Awards will be unveiled on Jan.24. The 89th Oscars ceremony will take place Feb. 26.
