yossarian100 Exceptional performances from both Evan Rachel Wood, playing a young woman with almost no social knowledge or skills, and Scott Speedman, as a shiftless young man no one will have an easy time liking. Together they pull of an almost perfect modern day fairy tale.I honestly can't say enough good things about Wood and Speedman's performances. They both conveyed so much emotion through simple facial expressions that their performances were just breathtaking. This is a movie you should add to your library, because you'll come back to it time and again. I just finished it and I'm already looking forward to seeing it again.I almost forgot about the rest of the movie. The story is simple but engaging, the supporting actors do their jobs with skill, and the director deserves a pat on the back for a job very well done. I laughed out loud and I'll admit to wiping away more than a few tears. The movie is just that good.Don't miss this one!
shamanphenomenon Everything in this movie works well together. The acting (which was spot on). The complex character growth is natural and relatable. The directing, soundtrack, musical score, writing, & the plot as a whole made me leave the movie feeling the emotion of love. I just happened on this movie while at home sick from work. Though it is not a complex movie, it does not need to be in order for most people to relate to one, some, or all of the characters. This movie touched on most emotions. Throughout the movie I laughed out loud, cried, was angry & tense, disappointed, stimulated, & relieved. A sign of a well scripted movie (in my humble opinion). This is the feel good movie that you seek out to watch that will make your day better. It is a well rounded romantic comedy! The Perfect date night movie for those that believe their love is a little crazy; whilst the world's view of it is crazier.
Amy Adler Jay Wheeler (Scott Speedman) lives up to his name as a wheeler-dealer. A son of wealthy New Orleans stock, he has chosen to run up gambling debts and pursue other nefarious actions. This lands him in jail, where he is sentenced to community service at a mental hospital. While mopping the floors, he saves a pretty patient, Daisy (Evan Rachel Wood) from being assaulted by a male resident of the same ward. Not long after this, his gambling totals are so large that the casinos are after him. His only recourse is to go back home for his brother's wedding, where he will ask his father for a "business loan". But, needing to look the part of a successful gentleman, Jay decides he needs a lady on his arm. All of the pole dancers of his acquaintance turn him down so he gets the brilliant idea to bring DAISY, after she follows him out the door one night. Is he serious? Yes, she's highly functional but may have killed her mother, also a disturbed individual. With instructions to tell everyone she is a nurse, can Daisy and Jay pull this ruse off? Not likely, and soon other escapades follow. Meanwhile, the hospital's head shrink (JK Simmons) is throwing fit after fit. Is there a future for this strange couple? This remake of a German film has a great concept and a winning performance from Wood to elevate its eventual loss of energy. What fun to have a "crazy" woman pose as a gal pal at a high society wedding! Speedman does fine work, too, as do Treat Williams, Simmons, Kate Burton and more. As the scenery goes from California to Louisiana to Texas and back again, fans of varied venues will be happy, too. Yes, the flick slows down and loses focus in the second half but still will resonate with a certain kind of offbeat film lover. So, if that's you, get shoes on and go get Barefoot.
cuthbertjoel I stumbled upon this film just clicking around IMDb. I'd never heard of it at all and had no idea what to expect. The film centres around Jay (Scott Speedman) and Daisy (Evan Rachel Wood) who strike up an unlikely relationship while on a visit to Jay's family and a road trip home. Very similar story concept to We're The Millers and Identity Thief. Characters that are thrown together get to know each other and realise there's more to each of them than meets the eye.The film has a few elements to it, some work, some don't. Speedman and Wood both play their own parts fairly well and at the start of the film, I thought the sort of childminder relationship worked quite well. Once the film started to suggest a more romantic vibe between these two, I just didn't buy it. The two never have that on screen chemistry to believe that you are genuinely watching two people falling for each other. There are a few funny moments in the film, and it does negotiate the rom-com cliché minefield fairly well. I think there may be some negative responses to the handling of mental illness in this film. It is quite trivialised and glossed over for much of the film. All in all, I thought it was average. My life is no worse for having watched it, but equally, I need to write this review hours after watching it as it won't be in my memory bank in a day or two's time.
