Bruce's Deadly Fingers Audience Reviews

Solemplex To me, this movie is perfection.
GurlyIamBeach Instant Favorite.
InformationRap This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
Staci Frederick Blistering performances.
Mark Turner With his death in 1973 the world lost perhaps the most charismatic star of martial arts. His legend continues to grow and since that time while there have been numerous stars to take on the format none of achieved the status of Lee. After his passing there were tons of imitators attempting to take on the mantle of martial arts stars but they were pale comparisons. In fact most of them were down right terrible. But their movies coming out when they did do deserve a place in film history due to the decision to use his name in every way conceivable. The variations of Bruce Lee's name were steady at the time. Some "stars" simply went by "Bruce" something. Then there were the variations of his last name including "Li" "Le" and more. Each actor had his hair cut to resemble the original star and more often than not there was some small resemblance in their facial features. But still they were nowhere near the expert Lee was nor had the amount of charisma he had.Which brings us to this film. The star here is Bruce Le as Bruce. As for a plot well that gets kind of tricky. The film jumps from one item to the next and gets so convoluted that trying to understand what is happening when gets tricky. Making matters worse is when good guys fight each other because they aren't aware they're both good guys.Basic plotline then. A bad guy martial arts expert and mob boss wants the "kung fu finger book" written by Bruce Lee himself. Throughout the movie he sends thugs to various places to search for the book. Then we have another story going on where a loser has a gambling debt to pay off so he tells his girlfriend to become a hooker for the mobster he owes the money to. She refuses but the mobster tells her he's going to make her. Why she gets to the point of being placed in jeopardy because of this so called boyfriend is one of many things that don't make sense. Not enough story? Well the girl happens to be Bruce Le's sister and he comes looking for her. In his search he learns about the mobster seeking the book and gets involved with that as well. The movie is filled with some of the most drawn out passive and wasteful scenes put to film. Moments of people sitting and talking but saying nothing, especially anything that moves the story forward. Scenes jump from one group of characters to another with no introduction of who they are or what they're involvement is but they meet and fight or confront one another. Why some people are questioned while looking for the book is never explained either. It's as if they bad buys pulled out a phone book and stuck a finger in it and decided that's who they'd question. To say this is a bad movie is to insult bad movies. It doesn't even qualify as a movie so bad it's good. Perhaps given the MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER treatment it might be bearable. As it is I would suggest it only to die hard martial arts fans and even they will be disappointed. Or perhaps if you want to collect every movie with the various versions of Bruce Lee clones you'll want to add this to your collection. For everyone else I'd suggest something more tolerable like finger nail extraction.
ckormos1 It opens to Lo Lieh fights Michael Chan. Michael flees. Lo wants the kung fu finger book that is associated with Bruce Lee. (Bruce Lee never had a finger style so this is wrong and not even needed. The kung fu book that everyone wants is a standard plot.) He sends men out to get the guys who seem to have it but they fail. They capture Old Snaggletooth who says "I honestly don't have it". I for one believe him. Does this guy look like he knows kung fu! (Slight spoiler here - Turns out I was wrong. He did have the stupid book hidden under his bed. Well, he certainly doesn't know kung fu!) Next, Bruce Le enters the movie. My initial impression – he is shorter than Nora Miao and scrawny too. He is looking for his sister who is being sold by her boyfriend to pay his gambling debt. (I always liked this use for ex- girlfriends.)I knew in advance this was one of the worst martial arts movies ever made. My mission is to watch every martial arts movie made between 1967 and 1984. I did my job and watched it. This was the longest 90 minutes of my life. I have been in the dentist chair for the same amount of time and it seemed shorter and less painful than watching this movie. Nevertheless there are some takeaways. First the clothes, if you can imagine a man wearing a pink plaid peppermint strip wide collar suit coat. I love the clothes. Men's clothes are so boring today. If I could wear something like that again I would wear it and I would go shopping for more ever week. Second there was the "ring of fire" moment. A flammable substance was spread in a circle and ignited with actors in the center. Yes, it was a windy night. That scene ended rather abruptly as the wind blew the flames higher and toward the actors. Just before any clothes caught on fire - cut! I wonder how many ended up in the hospital? What makes a movie seem like an eternity? Actually this is a simple effect to achieve. It works like this. Someone hands Lo Lieh a book and tells him that is the finger book. Cut to a girl walking down a stair case then across a room then up to Lo Lieh. She smiles, puffs her cigarette and finally asks, "What is that?" Lo says, "It's the finger book" for her benefit and not for the benefit of anyone watching the movie because we already know what the book is! This movie is filled with scenes of people walking into rooms, down hallways, then sitting on couches before they say two words to each other. There is even a scene where two girls are bored and watching television. Why? Clearly the people making this movie had no idea how to film the time between the fights. Finally there are the fights and Bruce Le He had bit parts in earlier movies and his first lead was in "The Dragon Dies Hard". In that movie he plays not Bruce Lee but a fan investigating his death. This movie is the first attempt to replace Bruce Lee with Bruce Le. Let me make this clear if it isn't obvious. Bruce Le looks nothing like Bruce Lee. When he tries to look like Bruce Lee he looks even less like him. When he tries to copy his martial arts he fails. He has minimal martial arts skills. He is short, scrawny and not good looking. Lo Lieh is also short but Lo Lieh does not look short because he has great screen presence. Bruce Le has nothing a leading man needs to be a leading man. Plus his fighting skills are below those of the stunt men in this movie like Lam Ching Ying. I cannot imagine any reason for Bruce Le to be selected to have a speaking part in a martial arts movie much less a lead. Actually there is no clear lead in this film. That is always a mistake but there was a time in movie making history when it was erroneously considered a good idea. In the final fight sequence Bruce Le stunk. The nunchucks were pathetic. On the other hand Michael Chan and Nick Cheung Lik certainly pulled their weight. I rate this a three out of ten. One for the peppermint stripe suit, two for the ring of fire, and three for the final fight sequences that did not include Bruce Le. Don't watch it. No one should ever watch this movie. I can only recommend this for the brain dead.
griffin-wanbaugh Out of all of the Bruceploitation actors, Bruce Le was probably one the actual best fighters.Bruce Li and Dragon Lee are also really good, however, it seemed as if they got better extras to beat up on. And if you want to see how badly this can effect a fight, click this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=xsaTSIh32qE. There, see how bad that turned out? However, this film fixes that problem, and pits Bruce Le up against such greats as Lo Lieh,James Nam, Cheung Lik, Chan Wai Man, Kong Do, Chu Chi Ling, Nora Miao, Leung Siu Wa, as well as that old guy from the Magnificent butcher that got beat up for stealing a chess piece. We also get a brief cameo from Bolo Yeung. So as you expect, the fights are pretty good. This amazing cast really helps the film out, and it also doesn't hurt that the soundtrack is pretty funky, too. The last 20 minutes is just endless action. The plot isn't worth explaining. Basically, Le plays Bruce Wong (seriously, that's his name in the movie) who is looking for "The Kung Fu Finger-Book", which is a book written by Bruce Lee that teaches the finger kung fu style. Why Bruce Lee didn't write something about Jeet Kune Do, the style he actually used, I don't know. I'd be lying if said this film wasn't with out its oddities. First off, I watched this dubbed, and I was actually laughing at how many times they mentioned the kung fu finger-book. They said this so many times, it began to come across as if they were just seeing how many times they could force it into conversation. There's also a chase scene. A very slow chase scene. Pitiful actually, but its really short, so whatever. Plus, the ending on my copy cuts off early. Bruce is killing the main bad guy and then it cuts to a back screen with "The end" pasted over it. I guess they did this to cut out some gore to get a lower rating, but considering the fact that this was made in 1976 and Hong Kong didn't have a rating system at the time, that wouldn't make any sense. I guess they just ran out of film. Anyways, if you like cheesy Bruceploitation flicks give it a go, heck, even fans of kung fu in general should look in to it for it's all-star cast. The fights are good, the story is utter crap, and the tunes are groovy. I enjoyed it enough, and I would advise you to rent it if you casually view these types of films, but buy it if your a collector, its a solid waste of a Sunday afternoon.
stefant This was one of the first movie, that i watched on video in the early 80´s, What i remembered was a lot of Kung-fu action, and pretty good acting, in that time the over the top sound effects when they were fighting was very disappointing, but still i remember one scene that was pretty strong, that was the snake torture, a woman tied to a bed having a snake that rattles between her legs. I think this movie is hard to get your hands on, but i still think it´s worth to watch. My rating is 6 out of 10
