When mild-mannered Martin Harvey finds out that he has inherited a vintage yacht, he decides to take his family on a Caribbean vacation to retrieve the vessel. Upon arriving on a small island and realizing that the ship is in rough shape, Martin and his family end up with more than they bargained for as the roguish Captain Ron signs on to sail the boat to Miami. It doesn't take long before Ron's anything-goes antics get the Harveys into plenty of trouble.

Captain Ron Audience Reviews

Noutions Good movie, but best of all time? Hardly . . .
BeSummers Funny, strange, confrontational and subversive, this is one of the most interesting experiences you'll have at the cinema this year.
Janae Milner Easily the biggest piece of Right wing non sense propaganda I ever saw.
Rosie Searle It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
Evan Seys This is a very funny movie that never really hit the headlines. No idea why, but maybe because I am a sailor myself, I can appreciate the humour. Well worth watching if you want to lose yourself in the Caribbean lifestyle from your cold and damp apartment in winter.A young family is left an old sailing vessel in a will, but have to travel to the Caribbean to sail it to the broker for sale so that they can pay off their mortgage. The adventures on the way with Capt. Ron (Kurt Russell) first make the family hate it, then love it. They have no experience and hire Cap'n Ron to help sail the boat with some disastrous results, all of which could happen in real life, but the movie drags you in to want to go out and buy a boat in the Caribbean yourself and sail away into the sunset, laughing all the way!Highly recommended.
SnoopyStyle Martin (Martin Short) and Katherine Harvey (Mary Kay Place) live in the Chicago suburb with their kids Caroline and Ben. His deceased uncle leaves him a yacht once owned by Clark Gable worth $250k. The only catch is that the boat is on the island of Ste. Pomme de Terre and they need to get it to Miami. Martin wants to bring the whole family to sail it but Katherine balks until Caroline comes home announcing her engagement to a leather jacket dude. The boat looks worst than expected and the broker hires local slobbish Captain Ron Rico (Kurt Russell). The family annoyed me at the beginning. I don't like the kid. He's not only a brat but he gets on my nerves. The girl is almost as bad. The married couple can bicker as long as it's fun. The family doesn't have the fun chemistry. I like Captain Ron a bit more. The odd couple feel between Martin and Captain Ron has some fun moments but the movie is not nearly funny enough.
wes-connors Chicago businessman Martin Short (as Martin Harvey) has good news for his attractive blonde wife Mary Kay Place (as Katherine). They've inherited the sailboat once owned by legendary Hollywood actor Clark Gable. It could be worth a quarter million dollars. There's a catch, though. They have to pick up the boat and sail it to Paul Anka in Miami. In recent years, Mr. Anka is more commonly found in Las Vegas. However, Vegas has no good places to dock your yacht. The first sign of trouble is when we see the boat has become dilapidated. But it's just a visual joke, because the ship is seaworthy. Sporting perfect hair and a fun attitude, Mr. Short hires grungy one-eyed Kurt Russell (as Captain Ron) to man the vessel. He's got great hair, too, and colored briefs. Along for the ride are Short's wife and kids: pre-teen Benjamin Salisbury (as Benjamin "Ben" Harvey) and hot-to-trot teen-aged sister Meadow Sisto (as Caroline Harvey)...The funniest scene in this comedy is probably the one where Short and Ms. Place, interested in copulating, accidentally lock themselves in the shower. Director Thom Eberhardt gets a good laugh when Mr. Russell opens the door on the hapless couple. However, the scene is not as fun as it should have been. John Dwyer's script later mentions "I Love Lucy", which reminds us of "The Lucy Show" episode with Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance getting themselves stuck in the shower. With their clothes on, Lucy and Viv were funnier. The "Lucy" episode milked the comedy for all it was worth, but "Captain Ron" wastes the situation. Interesting, too, is how the scene is cross-cut with young Salisbury swigging beer. Somehow, a foul-mouthed 11-year-old beer drinker isn't funny. Finally, the fact that this is Clark Gable's boat is only briefly alluded to, later, when the initials C.G. and C.L. are found on board. Gable isn't funny, either.*** Captain Ron (1992-09-18) Thom Eberhardt ~ Kurt Russell, Martin Short, Mary Kay Place, Benjamin Salisbury
vincentlynch-moonoi To decide how good a film is there are 2 primary issues -- the storyline/script and the acting. The storyline/script here is pretty decent for a comedy. Obsessive husband/father inherits yacht...goes to retrieve it out of county...has to hire a skipper to sail her back to the States. Revolutionaries, pirates, gales are among the crises the wacky American family survives. But they almost don't survive the skipper -- Captain Ron -- Kurt Russell. What sets this agreeable comedy apart is Kurt Russell's acting as Captain Ron. It's a bravura performance...perhaps his best.In terms of the other actors, the only really significant parts are those of the family. Martin Short is very good as the obsessive father/husband. I enjoyed Mary Kay Place as his wife. The rest of the supporting actors do their jobs, and Benjamin Salisbury and Meadow Sisto do well as the children. This is just a good, fun movie, with one great performance topping it off. Recommended!
