Cocktail Audience Reviews

ThiefHott Too much of everything
Kaydan Christian A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Fatma Suarez The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
Nicole I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
adonis98-743-186503 A talented New York City bartender takes a job at a bar in Jamaica and falls in love. Tom Cruise is brilliant in 'Cocktail' and i really mean that the man gave once again an excellent perfomance the same also goes for Elisabeth Shue who really had a terrific chemistry with him and felt realistic enough. The storyline is quite simple and showcases the dreams of a man trying to become a big name, have a job and do something for himself in general. Bryan Brown was also truly excellent in this movie. Dramatic, Funny but also entertaining this is 80's at it's Best. (A+)
Ian I never saw this back in the 80s or ever until now. I thought this was supposed to be good. But I guess people just want to watch Tom Cruise do whatever in his early heydays: Pour some drinks. Drive a race car. Fly a jet. Invest money. Be a lawyer. Get dressed up in uniform. It doesn't matter. People headed to the theaters.Cocktail is about two footloose and fancy-free bartenders have dreams of striking it rich with starting their own bar business and with, of course, the ladies. When the reality and true love hit how much sh_t will hit the fan or how many hearts will be broken and when will actual morals set in? There is double-crossing, sunny Jamaica scenes, damaged friendships and hearts. How will Cruise spin lemons into lemonade this time? This had a very thin as well as telegraphed story arc and bad cinematography. Overall, Cruise is more the movie than the story. I expected better from it.
SnoopyStyle Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise) is fresh out of the Army. He's studying business and working at his uncle's bar. He gets a job working for Doug Coughlin (Bryan Brown) in an Upper Eastside bar. He's horrible at first. His school work suffers as his bar work improves. Doug intends to open his own bar. The duo starts working at a trendy nightclub. Photographer Coral (Gina Gershon) takes an interest in Brian. She suggests working at bars in Jamaica. Doug dislikes the relationship. When Doug breaks them up, Brian is furious and ends their partnership. Next, Brian is bartending in Jamaica. He starts a relationship with vacationer Jordan Mooney (Elisabeth Shue) who is a waitress in NYC. Doug shows up married to rich flirtatious Kerry (Kelly Lynch). Doug and Brian get into a bet, and Brian ends up having sex with Bonnie (Lisa Banes). Brian goes back to NYC with Bonnie but it ends badly. He tracks down Jordan and is surprised by her pregnancy as well as her wealthy family.Where do I begin? First, Brian is a horrible guy. Jordan is well advised to keep her distance. Doug and Brian's friendship is toxic at best. The story is super melodramatic romance. It goes all over the place. I often remember this as a Jamaican movie but that's only the half in the middle. The first change is abrupt. It might be better to keep the whole movie in Jamaica. That would at least keep the random melodramatic twists down to a manageable level. There is an appealing aspect of Tom Cruise being at his most Tom Cruise but it's not appealing enough.
Marian20 After the box office success of Top Gun that catapulted Tom Cruise into mega-stardom,the producers and director Roger Donaldson cast him to make a film that has themes about love and materialism. And the result is Cocktail. It tells the story of Brian Flanagan,a former member of the U.S. Army who goes home to New York hoping to make a big fortune for himself. He starts looking for a job at Wall Street but nobody hires him which makes him end up in meeting Douglas Coughlin,an owner of bar.It results in him into becoming a bartender. This started to become a father-and-son relationship with Douglas mentoring Brian about the so-called "essentials of bartending" and life in general.Unfortunately,it ends up in a break-up after getting involved in an unlikely love triangle involving Coral. This prompts Brian to move to Jamaica wherein he meets a vacationing artist Jordan Mooney and romance between them results. The story progresses with a conflict between them,Douglas and Brian re-uniting,Brian becoming a boy-toy of a rich woman and later having Brian realize his materialistic ways and promises to change for the better and fight for love of Jordan, who unknowingly was a daughter of a Wall Street executive. No question that the movie is definitely shallow and simplistic. It wasn't meant for the audience to become better people despite the fact that the theme of materialism was brought up and making a message that money isn't everything in life.It was basically all about Tom Cruise and bartending. It was about life of the barman and bars.No question that Tom Cruise's charm and appeal was enough to bring people into the theaters.Aside from Cruise, the film also has great soundtrack. In the end, this unforgettable 80's box office guilty pleasure hit will never fall short of entertainment. An enjoyable bad movie indeed.
