SpecialsTarget Disturbing yet enthralling
Nicole I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
Wuchak RELEASED TO TV IN 2001 and directed by Simon Wincer, "Crossfire Trail" is a Western starring Tom Selleck as a laconic Westerner named Rafe Covington who travels to Wyoming to honor his promise to a dying friend: Look after the man's wife (Virginia Madsen) and ranch after he's gone. The problem is, the charlatan mogul of the nearby town wants them too (Mark Harmon). While this was a TNT production, it's on par with the average traditional Western/theatrical release, e.g. "The War Wagon" (1967) or "Open Range" (2003), and is more satisfying than most goofy spaghetti Westerns. Voluptuous Madsen is formidable in the female department while cutie Kyla (Anderson) Wise works well in the periphery as a barmaid. Moreover, likable Selleck towers in the role of the noble protagonist, who attracts an equally noble group of sidekicks (Wilford Brimley, Christian Kane and David O'Hara). The story surprisingly loses steam in the last act with a classic shootout-in-town between the heroes and villains. Don't get me wrong, the fight is muscular and competently executed, it's just a little lackluster somehow and gives away the flick's TV origins. Nevertheless, this is a worthwhile modern Western with Harmon superlative as the swindling antagonist. THE MOVIE RUNS 1 hour 32 minutes and was shot at CL Ranch, Calgary, Alberta. WRITERS: Charles Robert Carner (script) and Louis L'Amour (book). GRADE: B
xredgarnetx CROSSFIRE TRAIL has Tom Selleck keeping a promise to a dying friend to look after his widow (the always gorgeous Virginia Madsen) and ranch. He does so with the help of several buddies, among them the always colorful Wilford Brimley who is well hidden under a huge wig, facial hair and massive Stetson. Mark Harmon, playing a villain for once, has designs on the lady and the ranch. He brings in a bunch of hired guns, headed up by Brad Johnson, to settle Selleck's hash. You can guess whose hash gets settled. This is a TV movie that belies its made for TV nature. It is beautifully shot and wonderfully plotted and acted. For my money, Selleck can keep playing cowboys forever. Whether he wants to or not may be another matter.
TexasHunter I am an avid fan of westerns. No one is a bigger fan of the greats like John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Clint Eastwood, however if we are going to be realistic about westerns I have to go with Tom Selleck's characters. He does a great job. This classic has been researched very well. I am also a gun enthusiast and the weaponry was VERY accurate in this and all of the movies done by Selleck and Wincer. I also like the attention to detail concerning little things that Louis L'amour would pay attention to. If you will remember when Rafe braced Snake Corville he pulled the leather thong off of the hammer of his sixgun(which I think was a Smith and Wesson). This is a re-occurring theme in L'amour's books. This movie may never get the praise it deserves in the world of westerns but what a great one it is. I hope Tom Selleck does more of these.
Gala-6 This was a surprise gem that we rented on dvd. The directing and cinematography are excellent. Mark Harmon is wonderfully evil. Tom Selleck the hero....but with support of friends. Great cast all around. Beautiful scenery. A very enjoyable movie.
