Dad's Army Audience Reviews

Hellen I like the storyline of this show,it attract me so much
Bereamic Awesome Movie
Kirandeep Yoder The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.
Justina The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Genghis Rees Sorry, this was absolute garbage. Some well known names might have been here but the thing stank worse than an African refugee camps dug out latrine when everyone is suffering with...well, you get the idea. I bought this as a present for my elderly parents, for whom the original TV programme has been a staple in their viewing habits since the late 1960s; it is nearly always playing somewhere. Suffice to say that having decided to view it myself first (it had been something we had watched together as a family when I was growing up, so I wondered at how it might have been updated for today's viewing public) I was able to stomach nearly thirty minutes of this sad production (ten minutes more than Borat, mind you) before deciding that it had stolen more than enough time from my life. It was taken back to where I had bought it with the lie attached that it turned out that my parents had already got it! Since then (just four days) I have been in three charity shops that had copies of this DVD for sale at prices between 79p and £1 - one shop had two of them with one showing a different charity shop price tag on it demonstrating that it had been bought, obviously watched and then re-donated (to a different charity shop, probably out of embarrassment) within the space of a week.I fail to see the attraction in making a new film of an old TV programme with new actors recreating old characters. It won't attract a new audience unless the old audience are enthused enough to implore them to view it, surely, and this old audience will just be turned off by the way the old, familiar, gentle characters are replaced with newer yet unrecognisable faces (some were vaguely similar to the original actors) suddenly 'sexed' up in a harsh and abrasive, more modern fashion. Bill Nighy can usually be relied upon to do a fantastic job, but here he appears to have just used that far away gaze all the time that made him appear to be dreaming of actually being somewhere else where he could actually act.Do yourself a favour, people: unless you are a student of film/television and want to see how not to honour an old TV favourite, please do not bother with this utter abortion of a film. Discerning charity shop movie buyers are not even bothering with it, and that is saying something.
happy_hangman I wanted to like 'Dads' Army'. I really did. It features some of my favourite British character actors, and brings to the big screen one of my favourite TV shows. Unfortunately, it's awful from start to finish. The slapstick is over-done and unsubtly telegraphed, the pacing uneven (verging on the near comatose, at times), the cinematography unimaginative, and – unforgivably, given the wealth of material they had as inspiration – the script is unbearably weak. Bill Nighy and Tom Courtney look unutterably bored, and Bill Paterson barely seems to have noticed that the camera is rolling. Michael Gambon and Toby Jones are clearly trying to make the best of a bad job, but they are aping the characterisations and physical mannerisms of Ridley and Lowe...and I expect better - MUCH better - from actors of their calibre. Awful. If they upped the pace and spent less time trying to add needless detail to the characters' back-stories (did we, for example, really NEED to see the good Captain's wife? – she had much more comic worth as an off-screen gorgon!) it might have been bearable. It isn't.Stupid boys!
The Couchpotatoes Being a fan of the original television series I'd thought it would be a good idea watching the movie they made out of it. I have to admit the characters were very resembling the original characters. But for someone who never saw the series before, this movie might be a bit boring because you just can't relive the original characters in your imagination. But even to me, I am not sure they had to make a movie out of it. The series were way funnier. I think the early format of short episodes work way better then a long movie. All in all the movie is watchable, but certainly not as funny as I expected to be. Maybe in the future a movie based on the series Allo Allo? Making fun of the Germans is always funny.
Prismark10 Given that the BBC sitcom Dad's Army is still so revered after all these decades means that any film adaptation with almost an all new cast will be on a hiding to nothing. The film still has the upside down focus between Captain Mainwaring and Sergeant Wilson. The former a fastidious Little Englander bank manager. The latter, a more urbane and charming public school educated subordinate as well as a womaniser. The plot involves the Nazi's sending a secret spy to Walmington on Sea to discover the Allies D-Day plans. She is Catherine Zeta Jones masquerading as a glamorous journalist claiming to write a feature on the Home Guard. She charms most of the men in the town particularly Sgt Wilson who she knows from her days at University. The film introduces more female characters including Mrs Mainwaring and Private Godfrey's sisters who play a pivotal role in unmasking the spy. There are some inspired scenes where Mainwaring gets mistaken for Winston Churchill. I admit to being surprised to see Frank William's pop up again as the Vicar and Ian Lavender also turns up playing a different character.Toby Jones does well as Mainwaring maybe channelling Arthur Lowe. Bill Nighy comes off even more posh than John Le Mesurier and I felt that his character did not even belong as Mainwaring's number two.Tom Courtenay was underwhelming as Jones, Michael Gambon was spot on as Godfrey. The character's go through the popular catchphrases and even the theme tune turns up several times but the retread is just too workmanlike and lacked imagination. The film was too uneven, as a gentle comedy it was fine but at times it strays into smutty farce which is more Carry On especially in the scene where Fraser moons at the Nazis.
