David & Layla Audience Reviews

BootDigest Such a frustrating disappointment
CrawlerChunky In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Sameer Callahan It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.
Jakoba True to its essence, the characters remain on the same line and manage to entertain the viewer, each highlighting their own distinctive qualities or touches.
emergencyusadc A group of us went to see this movie. All of us in some way or another have great appreciation for independent movies because we all understand the challenges involved, which makes the movie that much more special. We had a diverse group, we had Iranians, Jews, Kurds, Americans, Italians, and Greeks and everyone found scenes that resonated with them. We had a wonderful conversation after the movie about politics, love, stereotypes, religions, family, immigration, weapons of mass destruction, and the evil things that can and are done in the name of religion and politics. How we can be against biological weapons and yet sell them, how we can be against dictators, but support them, how we can be against each other and yet at the core be the same. The movie over an over tried to present us with the reality that we all are the same and we all have contributed to where we are today! The movie touched on all these points and yet manages to tackle hard issues with comedy to take the audience through a spectrum of emotions.
Amir Shirazi I find the Jewish and Kurdish culture so fascinating. They are both have given so much to the world. I've always been baffled that the story of Kurdish struggle and all the massacre and the horrific things that have happened to these people has continued to be marginalized. I applaud Jay Jonroy for going against the current to write, direct, and produce a movie that raises awareness, educates and yet manages to make the audience laugh and cry! The movie is entertaining and more importantly is based on a true story that not only shows that love is more powerful than any prejudice or misconception we have about each other, but also shows that there is more that units us than divides us. You walk out of the theater curious to learn more and that's the greatest accomplishment of Jonroy which is motivate people to think, be curious, and seek the truth! Bravo to the cast and crew of the film!
dcctx04 Just by reading some reviews and descriptions, I knew I was going to walk into a movie filled with stereotypes and some political messages. What I didn't expect is that I would be crept out by the lack of true romance and love. I honestly got the impression that David purely wanted sex and Layla purely wanted the green card and they met somewhere in the middle. Sure, love can develop and it may have in their real-life story but you wouldn't really get that from the movie. Just when you think the characters will surprise you with a valiantly romantic gesture, they let you down with the sort of banal behavior one might find in the real world. Basically, I was pulled from all directions ... ethnic stereotypes, deadly politics, and ethically weak characters. I would expect a message of love would come through to rescue the viewer from all the other depressing stuff but there was barely a hint of it.I couldn't help but think that David didn't deserve her at all and that sort of ruined some of the grander points that were pain-stakingly being made. I'm sorry but that's how the movie made me feel.
heyam83 I have seen the film at London Kurdish Festival and as I noticed some men criticised it because it shows the fact that the women is not different from man expressing her feeling, drinking, dancing and choosing her partner( why Kurdish boys can get married to others whereas women can not). Men all over the world should realise that the woman is human being , she has feeling same like men , she can involve in politic like him. In general, the film was a new drama in mixing cultures, giving woman freedom to decide her own life. I shouldn't forget the music which was great. The only thing i was searching for in the film was the Kurdish language which was absent in the family conversations. Congratulations for Mr Jay.
