AniInterview Sorry, this movie sucks
Platicsco Good story, Not enough for a whole film
Limerculer A waste of 90 minutes of my life
Candida It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
Anonymous Andy (Minus_The_Beer) Before "Child's Play" and "Puppet Master," there was the lesser- seen, lesser-talked about killer doll movie, simply titled "Dolls." The third offering from Stuart Gordon, "Dolls" is a low-key yet supremely entertaining comedown, following the director's more high- concept and out-there offerings, "Re-Animator" and "From Beyond." It's also a collaboration between Gordon, his producing partner (and future "Society" director, among others), Brian Yuzna, and of course, Full Moon pictures. This leads you to believe you know what to expect, but Gordon and company throw a few curveballs your way, crafting a horrific fairy tale of sorts that strikes just the right balance between fun and frightful. After their car breaks down in the middle of a bad storm, The World's Worst Parents (the comical and on-point Ian Patrick Williams and Carolyn Purdy Gordon) and their instantly adorable young daughter, Judy (Carrie Lorraine), seek refuge in the home of an elderly doll-maker and his wife (Guy Rolfe and Hilary Mason). Also staying the night are the affable, slightly dopey but well-meaning Ralph (Stephen Lee) and two new-wave/punk-rocker hitchhikers (Bunty Bailey and Cassie Stuart). It's not long before the old man's hand- crafted creations start going bump in the night, sparking Judy's imagination, peeving her parents and ruining Ralph's beauty sleep. It's gonna be a long night for all involved! There's a lot to love in the tight, 77 minutes of "Dolls." First off, the cast is just absolutely brilliant, bringing a silly concept to life with colorful performances all around. You'll love some of them, and you'll hate the others, and you won't soon forget them. Likewise, the old house that the bulk of the film takes place in becomes a character of its own. One of the most memorable sequences involves poor Ralph stumbling around its halls late at night by candlelight as the creepy creations cause concern. The special effects, as dreamed up by "Troll" creator John Carl Buechler, are downright spell-binding. The dolls are at once ugly and convincing. For his part, Gordon keeps things light and dream-like, making "Dolls" a sort of horror movie comfort food. There are plenty of films about killer dolls out there at this point, but this dolly is one of the dearest.
SnoopyStyle The Bower family is speeding through the countryside until they are stopped by torrential rain. Their car is stuck and they walk to a nearby mansion. Little Judy Bower has an active violent imagination and Rosemary is actually her stepmother. Nobody answers the door and they break in. They are greeted by doll makers Hilary and Gabriel Hartwicke. He gives Judy the doll Mr. Punch. Ralph Morris (Stephen Lee) barges in with hitchhikers Enid and Isabel Prange. Judy witnesses the dolls attacking Isabel but only Ralph Morris believes her. That's before each one is attacked in turn. This is a well made small horror. It's always great to have a little girl in danger. Stephen Lee adds a little humor and I'm glad at least one adult is willing to believe the little girl. The movie could use more low angle camera shots. It could be scarier if the camera is at the little girl's level. The dolls are creepy and fun. There's a reason why dolls are a horror standard.
Finfrosk86 Man, this is one cool movie! The little girl (Carrie Lorraine) is really good. The goofy-ish guy (Stephen Lee) is good, and actually quite funny. Some of his reactions made me laugh. (I'm a tough crowd) Bummed me out to see that he died last year. Sad. The gray haired couple are really good. The effects are pretty decent for the most part. The pacing is great. It's one of those movies who doesn't show it's entire bag of tricks at once, but spreads it out through the movie. It is actually a little scary too, specially in a couple scenes. Simply put: it is a well made, entertaining horror movie. It is not boring for a second, and you keep wanting to see what happens next. Also it has some heart, despite being an 80's horror movie. Very nice. Classic, I'd say.
lagudafuad This movie is more of a joke than it is meant to be scary, all through the 77 minutes of the movie I kept wondering, "Who in their right mind, came up with a script that has dolls facing up directly to humans", the idea is just bull.We are all familiar with Child's Play (Chucky 1988) in fact some have become too familiar with the genre. What made Child's Play part one better than a lot of other movies in the same genre is that Chucky was sneaking up on people to kill them, also you will notice that the moment he decided to go at them directly he got killed. Here the toys are going at the humans and somehow managed to kill majority of them, well give it to them they were numerous while Chucky was just a single evil doll.Stuart Gordon, the man behind this film tried to put you on the edge of your sit… (emphasis on the word tried); there were scenes where we get to see side glances from the toys as they sat on their shelves (smh).Like most horror movies that seem to have a kid in the picture acting like a go between for the adults and the evil creatures, the child is initially not believed and often silenced when he or she airs their views on the strange happenings, with some other grownups giving out logical explanations to defeat what the child is saying. Same here also, the people involved in this movie are some passersby who got forced to go stay in a house like hotel, where the owners have a huge collection of dolls and as the name of the movie implies the dolls started killing the people. There is no other way to look at it, any scene in the movie that had the dolls walking towards the person they wanted to kill, will just feed you the viewer with enough ammunition to ridicule the scene as you will keep wondering why in heaven's name he/she did not do this or that. The movie's screenplay is a joke, some of the scenes that the adults were attacked looked like they wanted it, as some did little to nothing to get away from it. The acting is another problem in this movie, it was totally off and it was like the casting crew looked for the worst and cheapest actors available to make this movie. If you have never heard or seen Dolls, be grateful. www.lagsreviews.com
