Evan Almighty Audience Reviews

ThiefHott Too much of everything
2hotFeature one of my absolute favorites!
Doomtomylo a film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
Geraldine The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
dr-cornelius-119-743806 It's a great comedy, I'll give you that. But everything in the movie is just to badly made, and stereotypical. But, it's entertaining.
zkonedog When I began watching this movie, I completely expected a rip-off of the hilariously funny "Bruce Almighty" starring Jim Carrey. Same concept, same jokes, same old, right?! Thankfully, this version went in a bit of a different direction and was all the better for it.The film follows news-caster Evan (from the first film, played by Steve Carell) as he leaves the newsroom behind and branches out into politics. Of course, just when it seems he has it made, he gets a little visit from God (once again personified brilliantly by Morgan Freeman). God tells Evan that he must build an Ark (ala Noah), as "a flood is coming". At first, Evan tries desperately to ignore or even outright thwart the "hand of God", but quickly learns that such an attitude is impossible. Thus, the Ark begins to be built and hilarity ensues.Yet, despite the great sight sags and situational humor that Carell (of "The Office" fame) nails so perfectly, is this film really a comedy? I would have to say an emphatic "no". The only actual jokes offered are commentary from Wanda Sykes, and those get old real fast. Instead, the directors/producers use a combination of those sight gags and crazy situations to fashion a family film with a great message and a compelling storyline. Basically, while it may not have you laughing out loud, you will find yourself chuckling throughout, then actually caring about what happens to the characters at the end.Going in that more family-oriented direction saved this film from becoming a re-tread of the first effort. The writers knew that only Carrey could have nailed the physical comedy and "in-your- face" jokes of "Bruce Almighty", so they toned it down a bit for the much more understated (yet still funny in its own way) Carell. This film is perfectly safe to watch with your children and enjoy with the entire family. It isn't an instant classic, but you won't be looking at your watch, either.
DogFilmCritic Whats it about Evan Almighty, in which Steve Carell, playing a newly elected congressman from Buffalo, is commanded by God (Morgan Freeman). From news anchor to congressman the why and how is never explained but the logic in this movie is as thin as a rake, like in Bruce almighty its never establish what kind of religion our characters follow but we know they pray, one of the issues in the movie is the relationship between Evan and his family,he never has time to spend with them, the man is in congress he is not going to work his not going to work from nine to five Monday to Friday this work demands a lot of time so his family has to be very naive or very possessive,so after God delivers Wood and tools he reveals he wants Evan to build an ark there is a flood coming,he doesn't agree at first because if he did it wouldn't be so funny so Evan is chased by animals making any excuse to build a bad joke. After God makes it clear he wants Evan to build the ark, he starts to look like Noah for reasons, beard White hair and robes making him look like a homeless persons possibly affecting his job and everyone around him thinking his crazy, so as the ark is finished in quick movie montage Evan summons all the animals, most of them that are not from the Buffalo area or any area in the west hemisphere, so the flood comes and all the people in the area get in the ark, at this point i have a lot of questions in my mind that i probably will not find any answers to , such as why did all those animals need to be in the ark only the residents in that área would be affected, it was a local incident a lot of those animals would still exist, but I'm just running my mind at this point, so the day is safe Evan gets to spend time with his family. This movie doesn't have a solid plot point, its not about a guy getting the powers of God, its not about him getting to establish a good relationship with his family because it barley touches it,everything he dose is because his forced to thats it, The reason that this film exists is to cash in the success of the previous one, its a hit and miss only if your a hardcore fan of Carell you could probably give it a watch
cebakker99 If you are looking for Jim Carey type humor, then this is not the movie for you. It is not really a sequel to Bruce Almighty. But if you are looking for a warm, funny family film, then Evan Almighty is a winner. Despite the theme, it is not really religious but rather a movie about family sticking together and having faith. Steve Carrell is outstanding and Morgan Freeman is wonderful, as always. Wanda Sykes is very funny as well. It is rare to find a movie that both kids and adults can enjoy without one party being bored or offended. Don't let the negative reviews sway you - this movie is GREAT for all ages and has a nice message. (Not to mention a pretty funny dance sequence during the credits!)
