Iron Sky Audience Reviews

Moustroll Good movie but grossly overrated
CommentsXp Best movie ever!
Allison Davies The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Gary The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
mgruebel This movie fits the meme of "so bad, it's good!"Warning: if you are politically correct, stay away from this flick. It makes Saturday Night Live skits look like Shakespearean theater. Think crude meets satire at a whole new level. What else to expect from a Nazi sci-fi comedy? Take the start of the story: a black model is sent to the moon as a stunt to get the US president re-elected, but instead he falls into the hands of Nazis that have occupied the far side since the 1940s. Der Herr Regisseur (that's movie director in German) clearly loves steam punk, or in this case, diesel punk: it all looks like 1940s equipment, except BIGGER. Yes, ginormous! Der Herr Regisseur must also like Pink Floyd, since the far side of the moon is not always dark. The film has all kinds of good moments: like the blond-haired and blue-eyed Nazi schoolteacher who instructs her young charges with a 10 minute snippet edited from Chaplin's "The Dictator" to make Hitler look good, only to see the full-length feature later on Earth to find out the truth. Or when her heel gets planted in the forehead of her former beau, a German übermensch soldier intent on taking over as Führer and father as many Aryan children as he can. Or the Sturmtruppen, of which the Star Wars storm troopers are just Abklatsch. Or the current Führer, a watery-eyed Nazi played to great effect by Udo Kier until he's dispatched to Valhalla. Or the crazy presidential campaign manager who takes over command of a Mars mission spacecraft armed to the teeth - much to UN's surprise when the president informs them. Finland's the only country whose space mission was not armed, so no harm done! Plus, the film must get great credit for having Americans play Americans, Germans play Germans, and all in accent-free native tongues. Listening to all the bad Hollywood language coaching, it's a relief!Unfortunately, it also misses in many places. A Sarah Palin knock-off president looks sooo dated even now. Let alone another 10 years from now. A knock-off of Dr. Strangelove that reminds one how much better a dystopia comedy Dr. Strangelove is. Insufficient use is made of Chris Kirby as the black astronaut who gets turned white by a Nazi scientist. All of this and more drags the film down from a 7 (the highest rating I can give to schlock, even grand schlock) to a 6. Still, in another 30 years audiences will have forgotten about the crude allusions to Palin and other such mis-steps, and maybe the rating will go up a notch. The film is unapologetic in turning the table on US farce comedies about other countries. Let's face it: there are surely some Kazakhs offended by "Borat," some French offended by "History of the World Part I," and many other such grudges held by victims of the Hollywood schlock machinery. Time to smell the roses at home! Americans win the day in "Iron Sky," but not without a ding in the armor. My advice: Just don't take this too seriously - it wasn't meant to be. And if you're politically correct, just skip it.I'm not sure the movie will be forgiven its weaknesses and become a cult classic, but I wouldn't rule it out.
info-802-162025 Although Germans are not used to jokes about Nazis I love this movie and I am German. Iron Sky is set in 2018 and begins on the moon. Two American astronauts are one-small-stepping when they happen across a concealed lunar city in the shape of a swastika. It's a secret Nazi base! On the moon! Full of Nazis! This is a future in which the Nazis, after losing the second world war, escaped to the moon, whence they are now returning in flying saucers to conquer Earth. The movie is full of details, jokes and well played characters. Director Timo Vuorensola really did a great job! Iron Sky is a movie made with love and passion. In my opinion this is one of the best and funniest movies ever made. The story is great. The set is awesome. The actors are well chosen and do a great job. The special effects are amazing. If you haven't seen this movie yet you should. I bought it on Bluray directly when it was available and I am looking forward to watch/buy Iron Sky: The Coming Race soon.
graphixv I attempted to watch this film two or three times but for some reason i could never make it through. I finally did watch the whole film but admittedly had to fast forward through some of it toward the end. Like others, I found the film got duller and duller as it went on.The film is definitely at it's best when it caters around the Nazi base on the moon. For a low budget film, I thought the CGI was fine although the quality was mixed. The Nazi ship designs were Very Well Done, props to the designers, especially the space zeppelins.Where the film falls apart is as soon as the group falls to Earth. the film was a comedy with very little humor in it. There was almost zero character development here and many scenes just hung there without any real purpose what-so-ever. There was a lot of potential here, alas it was totally wasted. Even the black guy in the film, who could have been a major source of satirical comedy (see a movie like Blazing Saddles), was wasted and cut short. After that, the film was just really bland.
carbuff Watch the shorter version--this longer cut one seems to be wrecked by director's indulgence. The first half of this movie is great dumb fun. The special effects are perfect for this movie and it has a great steampunk vibe. In the second half it just goes completely off the rails, as it becomes all about making totally ham-fisted political statements (and it doesn't matter what your politics are, it just doesn't work). I have to admit that I have not seen the shorter version myself, but I imagine that with around 17 minutes pulled out in editing, this film could really be cleaned up well. In any event, I don't regret watching it, because it was fun and different and definitely worthwhile if you are into B movies. I'm just left feeling that I made a really big mistake by watching the director's cut, but I'm not going to spend another 90 minutes of my life confirming this very, very firm suspicion.
