Masaan Audience Reviews

Afouotos Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
FuzzyTagz If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
Whitech It is not only a funny movie, but it allows a great amount of joy for anyone who watches it.
Blake Rivera If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.
soumiksk This was one of the best movies I saw in my life. The story revolves around two characters. The story mainly shows the problems in Indian society. This movie can be ugly to the people who like to watch the glamorous Bollywood movies, live in a bubble and close their eyes to the reality. The movie is a reflection of Indian society. Altogether it was a great movie.
Rajan Mogha It is a nice simple movie which tugs at your heart. A girl follows her heart and goes with her lover for pre marital romp in a seedy hotel of Varanasi. Police raid and boy suicide. Blackmail of her father by ruthless corrupt cop.On other hand a SC boy of Chandal family falls in love with an upper caste (so called) girl. He is pursuing Civil Engineering degree. The girl dies and he goes in to depression. Chandals does the work of last rites of dead bodies on Manikarnika Ghat of Varanasi. It is said that if you are creamted at Varanasi you go to Heaven and if in Maghar then you go to hell. Kabir mocked this belief and insisted that his last rites to be done at Maghar. Thus Chalndals are at the lowest of the most unjust system of world. This film mocks the inhumanity of caste system. Symbolism of Kashi is too good to be missed. This is a story of triumph of human spirit. How both refuse to bow down to small mentality of a backward small town and society. They don't give up and come out triumphant.Music by Indian Ocean is another high point. They have set to tune a poem of famous poet Dyushyant Kumar (Tu kisi rail si gujarti hai; Main kisi pull se thar tharata hu).Acting of Richa Chadha and Sudhir Mishra is superb. New comers and others are also good.Must watch for the fans of realistic, intelligent movie which has strong story line and touches your heart. But it will be mocked by low IQ, rigid, holier than thou and prudish mentality persons and they should better stay away.
MizNat this movie had something new to offer, that's very rare in Bollywood movie plots. every character in this film was well developed and created. the actors did pretty great job as their acting was very convincing. the story was written in such a manner that it is hard to predict where it is leading to. the movie also offers beautiful shots of Varanasi. there are four major characters in this film. a girl who is guilt ridden after trying to have a sex with her boyfriend but ending in a tragedy. a father who finds different ways to earn money to pay a corrupt cop and a guy who falls in love with a girl from higher caste.this is just the base of the story, how it progresses from here is what makes the journey wonderful. the use of realism in the plot is really well written. its kinda sad, this movie is listed one of the underrated films of Bollywood. its a great movie which explores the story without using any clichés, as it is heavily dependent on realism.thanks for reading. :)
Suman Shakya Just the opposite of the modern day dross and gloss, "Masaan" portrays the hardship of life in the edge of Ganges of Benaras (so called ghats), where everyday dead people are cremated. The story revolves around the people who make a living in this ghat burning the dead or making small business, and their hardship on making a decent living. The film presents the agony of the poor and the extent to which they need to struggle. The film presents two separate stories running parallel. The first one is of a father and a daughter, and the next one is of a student from the lower caste whose family makes a living out of burning the dead, who falls in love for a girl. Both the stories unite at the end.The film offers less characters and is away from the commercial gimmicks. Still the film is able to touch you and the extent to which people lose their dignity out of poverty just brings tears to your eyes. The film beautifully captures the ghats of Benaras reverberating the mortality of human life. Most of the cast are new with Sanjay Mishra, all bringing life to the film. Overall, the film is remarkable for its superb portrayal of the agony the poor people go through and the hardship they need to make to meet the ends.Rating: 2 stars out of 4
