Minotaur Audience Reviews

ThiefHott Too much of everything
GurlyIamBeach Instant Favorite.
Borserie it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.
Aiden Melton The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
montferrato I do like movies based on Greek myths. However, this is a really bad movie. Apart from the beautiful maymie McCoy, the presence of Rutger Hauer and the interesting first five minutes of the movie, it is all really bad.1. Minoans were not African, but white-Caucasian. 2. It is grotesque to see the bad guy inhaling some kind of drug from a bull-skull like a crack addict from the Bronx. 3. The actors are awful 4. The movie lacks a convincing story, and it has extremely poor dialogs and an even poorer script. While the special effects are not too bad and there is the occasional pretty woman, the movie is really awful. If you have read a bit of mythology, the movie makes you puke, as it is designed for a really mediocre audience. However, i suppose that you may enjoy the movie in the following cases:1. If you are drunk 2. If you are taking hallucinogenic substances on a regular basis 3. If you have a good hangover and are basically sleepy 4. If you suffer from insomnia 5. If you are between 6-10 years old and have a lot of free time.In any other case, a normal adult person wouldn't like the movie.
leveller0@yahoo.com This is a film that is loosely derived from the Greek myth of Theseus. Here the hero Theo also goes to join a contingent of youths taken to be sacrificed to the minotaur. He is also helped by a woman - the consort of the evil Bad Guy. Bad Guy incidentally is a cross between Morpheus from The Matrix (and thinking about that, Theo is a bit like Neo) and the evil person in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Lastly it is set in some bygone classical age as well. However it has a dark moody backdrop throughout, strange jarring cinematography, and alternating pseudo-philosophical dialogue and clichés. The characters are all trite and very annoying. It is amazing how dull the film is for the first 3/4. Even the labyrinth is not creepy, just a boring excursion looking for lost girlfriends, random vagabond dwellers, and exits. It does get slightly better once most people die though.
Paul Andrews Minotaur is set many 1000's of years ago in an age when the world was ruled by a dark empire from an island palace called Minos, these people worshipped the most powerful of all Gods the Bull. In a horrible act of worship the Queen (Shiva Gholamianzedah) offers herself to the God & is impregnated with a hideous Bull like creature called the Minotaur which she gives birth too, every 3 years 8 youths from the village of Thena are taken to Minos to be sacrificed to the Minotaur & that time has come once again. The ruler of Thena Cyran (Rutger Hauer) has a son named Theo (Tom Hardy) whose girlfriend Ffion (Donata Janietz) was taken 3 years ago, Theo hears that she may still be alive so in an effort to find out he makes sure he is one of the 8 sacrifices who have to face the horrors of the Minotaur & it's labyrinth...This English, German, Luxembourg, French & Spanish co-production was co-produced & directed by Jonathan English & while it isn't going to win any awards Minotaur turned out to be a lot better than I had originally anticipated. The script by Nick Green & Stephen McDool takes itself very seriously & even though it's based on the Greek legend of Theseus & the Minotaur it actually bears little resemblance to it in truth, the film moves along at a nice enough pace, it never bores to the extent where you feel like switching off, the character's are pretty good even if most of them don't do much, the dialogue is alright & the Minotaur itself is a pretty impressive beast. There's some nudity, there's some gore, there's lots of special effects & the story isn't too bad either. Don't get me wrong, Minotaur isn't any sort of masterpiece, far from it in fact but it's a decent watchable & quite fun sci-fi horror film that overall impressed me more than I thought it would. However I did feel a bit sorry for the Queen, I mean she lets herself get impregnated with a deformed bull creature & what thanks does she get? None, they cut it out of her with a knife & let it feed on her blood, now that's gratitude for you.Director English does OK, the MTV style quick cuts & shaky camcorder syndrome are thankfully absent here & you can actually see what's going on at all times which is nice. The film has a decent enough atmosphere to it as it's shot in nice golden candle lit hues & tones while the period setting is well realised. The special effects are surprisingly impressive here, the CGI computer effects are excellent in fact & the Minotaur looks the absolute business even though those looking for a faithful representation of the half man/half Bull Greek myth may be disappointed. The puppet effects are also very good, the two techniques are used well together & compliment each other. There's some gore here but not much, most of the gore consists of the Minotaur impaling people on it's horns although there's a fair amount of blood splatter as well.I was somewhat surprised to see this had a healthy sounding budget of about $7,000,000, I must admit that sounds like a lot of money for what ends up on screen impressive special effects apart. It's certainly well made with good production values but seven big ones? Not that you would know but Minotaur was actually shot in Luxembourg. The acting is OK, genre favourite Tony Todd has put on some weight since his Candyman (1992) days, Rutger Hauer is here for rent money & Ingrid Pitt is unrecognisable under lots of warts & wrinkles playing an ugly old woman while babe Michelle Van Der Water provides the good looks.Minotaur is a decent creature feature with some nice gore & impressive special effects, it won't change your life but it's an entertaining way to pass 90 odd minutes. Certainly better than I expected & better than most creature features such as Python (2000), Crocodile (2000) or Cerberus (2005) to name but three...
gavin6942 After the queen of Crete conceives a child with a bull, a monster is born: the Minotaur. Now, every so often a group of young men and women must be sacrificed to him as a "tax". But this time, one man (Theo) is determined to end its hunger forever.Although this film only came out last year, it seems like I must have walked past it in the video store one hundred times, each time picking it up and setting it down. "Is it possible that a straight-to-video movie about a minotaur could be any good?" I thought. And always I answered, "no." But after finally biting the bullet, I must confess: this movie had some strong points to it.The best thing going for this movie was Tony Todd ("Candyman"). Todd never disappoints and he is served in large doses throughout this film. You would think a horror icon wouldn't have much more than a cameo here, but he is a central character and plays himself off to be the most menacing tyrant imaginable. Has Tony Todd ever disappointed you? Probably not, and the more we get the better the film.I also like the exploration of sexuality this film offers. I have seen a great many shower scenes or teen sex scenes and they're often forgettable. Here we have something a little different. There's a very passionate love scene (though not technically sex) between the main character (Theo) and the female villain (Tony Todd's character's sister). Very well shot. And of course the opening scene with a woman being mounted by a bull. I cannot recall ever seeing that in a film before and likely never will again. The special effects were alright for a lower budget film. The minotaur himself was just alright, nothing special, but I thought they did a fine job with him as a child. The really best thing was what I guess would be called the cinematography -- the coloring of the different scenes, giving it a very mythical look. The story deviates from the legend in a number of respects, but unless you're a really picky fan of Greek mythology, you probably won't care and most people won't even notice. I thought a few things seemed off, but it wasn't until I researched the story afterwards it became clear. I don't think any less of the story or film because of the discrepancies. If you're like me and you kept avoiding this film, give in to your instincts. I think you'll be surprised. And if you're let down, at least you won't have to pick up this movie another hundred times. You can move on to something a little riskier, like "Kottontail".
