Mr. Majestyk Audience Reviews

XoWizIama Excellent adaptation.

Tayloriona Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
alexanderdavies-99382 "Mr. Majestyk" is one of Bronson's best. There is action, good direction and Al Letteri is a marvellous villain (mixing with the real underworld probably helps). The plot is kept fairly simple which is the right way in my opinion. Bronson who plays a farmer of melons, faces a threat from the local mob who wish to take over his land. Knowing him, he won't exactly feel threatened - just a tad annoyed! Hold on to your seats, this film comes thick and fast!!
sol- Having betrayed the trust of a contract killer who he fled a transportation vehicle with, a hardened melon farmer reluctantly agrees to act as a 'bait' for the police who believe that the killer will take revenge in this Charles Bronson action vehicle. Made in the same year as 'Death Wish', Bronson is in equally as fine form here, and while the film does not offer anywhere near as touching a portrait of a man forced into violence, there is a lot to be said for the genuine passion that Bronson shows for his crops and his sympathy for the migrant workers he employs. The action sequences are expectedly good too, though the script could have done with a bit more work. It is hard to believe that Bronson just expects the contract killer's girlfriend to drive the two of them to prison without any arguments at a key point. The plot also relies heavily on the hit-man being impulsive and unpredictable, which does not quite gel with the notion of him being so successful in both his profession and ability to evade the law. A half-baked romance between Bronson and one of his workers adds little to the film too. Most filmgoers will, however, come here for the action and with four wheel drive chases across the desert, tense shoot-outs and a grisly scene in which a policeman is killed while on the toilet, it is all highly memorable stuff. The novelty value of Bronson as a farmer is worth mentioning too. It seems odd that the filmmakers could not come up with a more inventive title than its main character's name, but working under open skies in the fresh air, maybe his profession really is majestic.
Scott LeBrun Especially if the man in question is the great Charles Bronson. The iconic tough guy actor plays the title role, who merely wants to go about his business in peace. And that business is watermelon farming. When Majestyk is arrested for roughing up sleazy, worthless little weasel Bobby Kopas (Paul Koslo), it brings him into contact with syndicate hit man Frank Renda (Al Lettieri). After a series of incidents, Renda comes to utterly despise Majestyk and want him dead.Very capably directed by the versatile Richard Fleischer, "Mr. Majestyk" features an engaging Bronson performance, and a strong supporting cast. The tongue in cheek antics are courtesy of screenwriter Elmore Leonard. Brief bursts of violence and a few action set pieces help to make this watchable, as well as a brilliant music score by Charles Bernstein. Lettieri is an effectively intense antagonist, Linda Cristal has lots of appeal as migrant worker Nancy Chavez, and Koslo is great fun as the pathetic Kopas, although Lee Purcell has an underdeveloped role as Rendas' associate "Wiley". Taylor Lacher, Frank Maxwell, Alejandro Rey, Jordan Rhodes, and Bert Santos are all good as well. Veteran character actor Richard Erdman appears uncredited as attorney Dick Richard. In the end, "Mr. Majestyk" is no great shakes, but is still nicely plotted and solidly entertaining for its duration. For a disposable bit of entertainment, it is quite agreeable.Seven out of 10.
Cristi_Ciopron Although the desert landscape and lowlife milieu appalled me strongly, I remember having seen the Majestyk flick twice, or thrice, knowing as I did that I was supposed to enjoy it, and a similar impression was made upon me, at the same age, by an _actioner with Chuck Norris and Carradine, but I never managed to like Norris as much as Bronson, whom I had first seen in a railway western from the early '70s. Anyway, Bronson brought and suggested a world that was very unlike my own—and sordid, depressing. I know Majestyk isn't a very acclaimed flick, quite on the contrary; but, when I was merely 12, I strove to enjoy it, it was supposed to be manly and what not. (It wasn't boring—and I didn't find it ridiculous, but convincing.) As subject, it's fit for Bronson—sleaze masquerading as social awareness —socially aware sleaze. Its world of scum seemed alien, menacing and disheartening. Later, I grasped that it was the world of pulp and hardboiled fiction—taken, of course, here, to a very undemanding and mindless level. I mean, this is not, I presume, how hardboiled is supposed to look like.Nowadays, movies bore me—maybe all of them, and certainly the very idea of watching them, or taking an interest in them, as I have found them to be only surrogates of art or fun; I have ceased seeing movies. Therefore, I only publish here now and then. As I don't watch movies anymore, perhaps I will go on remembering movies I have seen long ago. Take it as a treat for the fans of this page. The cold ashes of my movie criticism, and of a former identity.
