Aiden Melton The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
Nayan Gough A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Jordache Wee Renaissance is not your typical animation. A simple black and white like Sin City with specific bright colors for a specific item. A combination of The Matrix animation + Sin City + A Scanner Darkly makes the film interesting. Excellent dark and bloody plot too.According to Wikipedia, the producers used motion capture and computer graphics to create the film's unique look.The cast performed their scenes in motion-capture suits in front of a blue screen. Computer animators translated these animations to digital models used for the characters.The animated characters were placed in three-dimensional computer backdrops, with post-process effects added to achieve the film's final look.French automaker Citroën designed a car specially for the film, imagining what a Citroën might look like in 2054.The film cost 14 million € to make over six years. It was funded by Disney with 3 million USD provided from Miramax.The year is 2054, Ilona Tasuiev (Viriginie Mery/Romola Garai), a young female scientist who worked for a megalomaniac corporation called Avalon was kidnapped.Thus, Avalon corporation puts pressure on Barthélémy Karas (Patrick Floersheim/Daniel Craig)- a policeman who specialized in abductions, to find her alive as soon as possible.Karas is a moody and violent police specializing in kidnapping cases shows a boundless selflessness and also to the extend of which he sometimes breaking the police code.The key to his obsession with finding missing people lies mysterious somewhere in his past. And he is the only person who is in charge of finding Ilona's whereabouts.However, the mission gets more dangerous and important when other people tries to get to her first.Ilona is an intelligent young woman is involved in a conspiracy where she has found the secret to immortality.Karas recalls a conversation with Dr. Jonas Muller (Marc Cassot/Ian Holm) and Dr. Nakata (Robert Watson Barr) on the mistake they made when he found how the disappearance of the young children is somehow related to the secret project for immortality known as "The Renaissance Protocol".
bob the moo Paris in 2042 and an employee of the health & beauty giant Avalon goes missing. Her employer wants her found urgently and the case is assigned to a jaded policed captain called Karas. Karas teams up with Bislane, the sister of the missing scientist and together they find connections between Avalon, buried research, underworld bosses and a discovery that Avalon is frantic to get its hands on.Renaissance came to me with reviews that praised the style but noted that the story limited how good the film was as a final product. I tried not to watch it with this in mind but it was difficult because the collected wisdom is correct in this case and this is just how the film plays out. The plot is a slow starter mainly because the start is where the characters and depth is supposed to come in, with the "action" and reveals coming later. Unfortunately but perhaps unsurprisingly the film doesn't have this depth early on and it didn't really engage me, leaving the potentially complex plot to slightly confuse me while also failing to grab my attention. This changes as the film goes on and things become clearer and I did get more interested in the second half on the way to a solid ending for this type of thing.Obviously the main selling point of the film is the animation and the visual style. In this regard the film is rather superficial until you get into it, then after a while it is cool and broody, full of shadow and atmosphere. Such a shame then that with all the cool visuals, we are given English cast that deliver such flat and dull performances by contrast. Craig is a distinctive voice of course but he seems to focus on this rather than working on his character. Holm is a bit better and appears to be putting a bit of effort into it but Pryce and others drift by without having a lot of material to work with. Always nice to hear Sosanya's tones but she has a tiny part.Renaissance is very much the product of the approach that made it. Visually it is impressive with oodles of style but the story, although it gets better, is not as engaging as I was hoping for and the performances are surprisingly and disappointingly flat.
TermlnatriX There's about 25 years worth of inspiration packed into it. Beginning with existential themes of Blade Runner, as well as the vision of the future - with corporate billboards advertising their products, to the technology of the later Matrix films and Spielberg's A.I., and finally the black and white graphic novel look similar in style of Sin City. The creators have put in a lot of effort in the visual department and the outcome is a well crafted future neo-noir. Add a detective story and you've got an interesting film. I know what it wanted to be, but regardless of the stunning visuals, it wasn't enough to get it to the final destination.
x_louvet I would almost give it 10 out of 10. However, there are some confusing parts as well as sections that are miss-leading which hurt the flow/continuity of the film. The story line is great and well composed; you will definitely want to watch this quietly to fully understand it. The characters are complicated and so is the story line, expect to be given only enough information to stop scratching your head, it's a film where all is explained in the end. The animation is great and the combination of femme fatal and film noir result in a great film that is unlike anything else I've seen in animation. It is a black and white film and its quiet dark in a few scenes so it's worth watching it on a good T.V, or plasma. The character voices do save this film in its English version, but it would have been more convincing if there were some French accents to emphasize that its happening Paris, I enjoyed it more in French with English subtitles. One the whole its well worth buying on DVD or BlueRay if they have it! And personally if you enjoyed this film you might also like; Waking Life & Ghost in a Shell 2 Innocence, this is just a personal suggestion.
