Ronin Audience Reviews

Plantiana Yawn. Poorly Filmed Snooze Fest.
Brendon Jones It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
Nicole I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
Zandra The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
Richie-67-485852 What a superb film and when I first saw it, I stumbled on it instead of knowing about it. That's unusual as I keep abreast. If this was given the wide release it deserved, many would benefit from this quality entertainment. You have an excellent story that just refreshes itself as it is being told. Then, good direction that emphasizes all the right moves. Furthermore, quality actors on the top of their game and lastly, suspense, thrills, action and a satisfying conclusion. That's what entertainment is all about. We get to glimpse the world of espionage, crime and human nature all set at a fast pace that never challenges the attention span but instead feeds it steadily. Its like playing with a toy and never tiring from it. This movie meets one of my pet requirements that makes it outstanding i.e. it has memorable scenes making it a must see over and over. Definitely one for the DVD collection to be sure. When glimpsing this world of spy vs spy with strong criminal undertones, we get to see how everyone has the same tools, abilities and opportunities to do what they have to do. However, when pitted against your like kind, it is sort of an Olympics of a sort where only the best get the gold medal and there is no silver or bronze. This is high stakes, no second chances or do-over living acted out on the screen. It makes you wonder just who will prevail and why? Good movie to snack with and of course have a tasty drink to keep the palette moist. There are some really well-done twists here and there making one not want to look-away or risk having missed the point that they make. Just focus on this movie for its entire run. No cell phones, texting or bathroom breaks. Just snack and watch! Then breath-in. If you happen to purchase this, look forward to the alternate ending
fredtee Beats me why a lot of reviewers gush over this movie-mess. The kabuki dance with the silver case gets old, fast. A clue that this silver case is all about nothing: A hotel is inspected by DiNero...and very conveniently, on cue from the lobby walks a group carrying a silver case. But the silver case is not captured this time, for DiNero only takes camera shots to plan the capture. Everyone returns a second time and the keystone-cops chases are on... and on... and on... and on.Who is following this plot? Who cares? About as ridiculous as the car chases on the wrong side of highways and tunnels. Are the French cops really so stupid to let these chases go on, bystanders get terrified and hurt, countless vehicles get destroyed....while the reckless drivers go free?At one point DiNero directs his own surgery to remove a bullet from his abdomen. Is there anything this man cannot do? Oh, I forgot, he cannot capture the silver case.Hint: is DiNero an undercover CIA agent, whose real purpose is to find and kill the Irish terrorist who is preventing peace between the British and the Catholic North Irish, through the girl "my name is Deidre." We can only guess.Spoiler Alert: Capturing the silver case means nothing. All of the car chasing and killing mean nothing. DiNero looks and act like he's been forced into acting in this movie...and can't wait for it to end, sipping a cup of coffee. Frankly, neither could I.
Tweekums This French-set thriller opens with Sam, a former CIA operative entering a Parisian bar; here he meets Deirdre, an Irish woman who is recruiting a team to steal a case that the Russians are also keen to get their hands on. We are quickly introduced to the rest of the team; Vincent, Gregor, Spence and Larry. One of their number is soon dismissed when it is revealed that he is just a wannabe rather than the skilled ex-soldier he claimed. The remaining members get on with the job but just as it looks as though they have got the case it turns out that one of their number intends to betray them and inevitably he gets his hands on the case. Now both the Russians and the remaining members of the team are after the case and if that weren't enough the team's Irish employers seem about to betray them as well.If you are looking for a solid thriller with plenty of action this is definitely worth watching. There are plenty of impressive shootouts and a couple of really good car chases. There are several tense moments and a few real surprises. The story itself is fairly simple and we never learn what is in the case. The fact that the case remains a McGuffin is a good thing to my mind; this way it can be whatever the viewer thinks it is; if it was explained explicitly we'd be wondering how realistic it is that both the Russians and a shadowy Irish group want with it. The cast features plenty of well-known actors most of whom are on good form. Robert De Niro puts in a solid performance as Sam and Jean Reno is equally impressive as Vincent. Natascha McElhone impresses as Deirdre and Stellan Skarsgård is great as Gregor. Sean Bean is fun as Spence even though his character isn't around for all that long. The ending is satisfying although trying to tie it in to certain real life events seemed a bit forced. Overall I'd certainly recommend this to fans of classic action-thrillers; especially if you like a really good car chase.
blanche-2 From 1998, Ronin is directed by John Frankenheimer and stars Robert DeNiro, Jean Reno, Jonathan Pryce, Natascha McElhone, Stellan Skarsgård, and Sean Bean. The title is taken from the Japanese; it describes Samurai without a master. These Ronin are specialists and mercenaries, from Special Forces or Intelligence units hired by Dierdre (McElhone) on behalf of her boss Seamus (Price). Their job is to obtain a suitcase from someone who is about to sell it to the Russians. It seems obvious that Dierdre is an IRA member. The men are nearly successful, but one of their own switches the real suitcase for a useless one and steals it for himself, intending to sell it to the Russians. The chase is on.Wonderful action movie with fantastic performances all around, but especially from DeNiro and Reno. The scenery from all over France and the camera angles used are wonderful. One of the towns filmed in is shown in such detail, you feel like you're there. The car chases are killers, done in Alpes-Maritime.For figure skating lovers, there are skating sequences by Katarina Witt, who won won two Olympic Gold Medals for East Germany, first in the 1984 and 1988, and was world champion 1984-88. This was filmed ten years later, and she was still in phenomenal shape. Highly recommended.
