Star! Audience Reviews

Cubussoli Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
Unlimitedia Sick Product of a Sick System
Salubfoto It's an amazing and heartbreaking story.
Humaira Grant It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
preppy-3 Mega bomb that chronicles the life of Broadway legend Gertrude Lawrence from the 1930s to the 1940s. Julie Andrews plays the title role. This cost a lot of money to make but it bombed badly. It's easy to see why. Andrews plays Lawrence as a shrill obnoxious woman very full of herself. While that may be factually correct it's not someone you want to spend three hours with. Also the movie is frankly dull. When there's no musical number on the movie comes to a screeching halt and dull dramatic scenes come on. Also this rambles on for three hours! On the plus side Daniel Massey throws in an Oscar-nominated performance as Noel Coward. He's great! Also all the songs are good and there are eye-popping production numbers. And Andrews wears some beautiful costumes all through the movie. Every scene she has on a different glamorous outfit! Still it doesn't work due to Andrews. She plays her character as such an obnoxious witch that you don't care. Worth seeing for Massey and the musical numbers only.
Roedy Green Star must have been a very expensive movie to make. There are thousands of opulent costumes and sets. Almost every scene is bursting with extras in posh period dress. It is mostly a long string of stage performances. Julie Andrews is her usually amazing self with the surprise her skills include acrobatic dancer with snake-like grace.Gertrude Lawrence is a flip character, so the glue between the stage numbers about her private life is somewhat superficial. She tends to have several men on the go at once. This shocked audiences at the time the film was made, so they skirted the issue of sex rather prudishly. It is kind of like a 40-course dinner of exquisite French pastries. The movie is too long. It would have worked much better if pared down to standard length.Daniel Massey plays a young Noel Coward. He is great fun and quite believable.
pianolover51 As a cohesive film, I would have rated this film a 4. As a showcase for the phenomenal Julie Andrews, then at the peak of her powers, I would give it a 10. As a compromise, I give it an 8. I can add little to the other discussions of this film and, all these years later, my little comment will do little to alter anyone's opinion of it. I do wish, however, that it would be released on Bluray, with the intermission music restored. The picture, when compared with the recent Bluray release of Hello, Dolly! is rather faded and washed out. Julie's terrific music numbers and the fantastic sets and costumes deserve first-class treatment.
petersj-2 I can't help it. I confess that I love Star. Gertrude Lawrence was not much of a singer but Julie is, so do not expect any accuracy. Julie came in for a lot of flack in this picture and she hardly deserved it.The critics here exclaimed "Julie misses the point" But this was a time where musicals were not that popular with trendy critics who seemed to love attacking musicals. I argue that they all wanted another Sound Of music. It is a pity that it did not get a better deal although it has been revived a few times in a cinema here and audiences are warming to it. Its not the first time a film has been misjudged or under rated. Julie is delightful and she is indeed a true star but Daniel Massey is a marvelous NoelCoward. Richard Crenna is beautiful and as he always was very easy on the eye. I think it was made at the time when musicals were starting to lose favor which is very sad. I miss the musical and while I love Chicago and Dreamgirls I must admit that I miss the big musical and admittedly old fashioned musicals like Star. Getrude Lawrence was a fascinating woman but I don't think Star should be seen a biopic. The stage was where she really belonged, Julie makes the film a very pleasant diversion.
