Acensbart Excellent but underrated film
Juana what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Hitchcoc At first I thought this would be one of those things where you say, "The film wasn't much, but we get to see Mickey Mouse for the first time in sound." To the contrary, this is a funny, endearing little film, with our hero turning objects into musical instruments. He is a bad employee, constantly ridden by Pete his boss on the boat. Sometimes these bosses get a bad rap because, after all, their business should be important. Nevertheless, Mickey and Minnie are really cute and steal the show. I have always been impressed with the way the characters move and gyrate to the music. While the drawing is simple, it works wonderfully.
gavin6942 Mickey Mouse, piloting a steamboat, delights his passenger, Minnie, by making musical instruments out of the menagerie on deck.I suppose someone could look back now (2015) and say this was a very simple film, and not all that amazing. But put in the context of its time, it really shook people and the young animation industry. Mixing sound and cartoons was still a new thing and this film not only blended them, but provided something people actually wanted to watch.Technical achievements aside, this is Mickey and Minnie Mouse almost 100 years ago... and they are going strong as ever today. Has any other cartoon character had that kind of longevity or long-lasting multi-generational appeal? Maybe to some degree, but certainly not on this level.
timon310 While it's popularly thought and Disney propaganda, that Steamboat Willie is the first Mickey Mouse cartoon; the truth is that Plane Crazy is when Mickey made his first appearance. All one would have to do to check this is to look at the release dates. Plane Crazy was released before Steamboat Willie. My thought is that because Mickey attempts to have his way with Minnie in a not so very nice way in Plane Crazy, Disney has made a concerted effort to promote Steamboat Willie as Mickey's debut but that's not the truth. I love both of these shorts, but Plane Crazy gets the short end of the stick in Mickey Mouse/Disney Studios history.
JV-6 Steamboat Willy was not the first cartoon to feature Mickey Mouse. The first film to star America's friend was "Plane Crazy". "Plane Crazy" was released May 15th 1928 in Hollywood California,in the silent movie format. "Steamboat Willy" was released November 18th 1928 as a SOUND movie (it was also released July 29th 1928 as a silent film). Thus making "Steamboat.."the first SOUND film of Mickey but NOT the first film for the little American Mouse. While many game shows have used the question: "What was the first appearance of Mickey Mouse?" The true answer is "Plane Crazy" not "Steamboat Willy". These dates can be checkout on IMDb under "release dates".
