Submarine Audience Reviews

Karry Best movie of this year hands down!
Stevecorp Don't listen to the negative reviews
Ceticultsot Beautiful, moving film.
Rosie Searle It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
nachtturne I was looking for movies capturing the nostalgic aspect of teenager movies, when a friend of mine recommended me Submarine. While I didn't quite find what I was looking for, Submarine prove itself to be a very enjoyable movie. The story follows the teenager Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts), a british high schooler, who set two objectives to achieve: firstly, to lose his virginity, and secondly, to fix his parents deadbedroom-syndrome and with it, their marriage. While the plot itself is very similar of those teenager movies Hollywood turns out twice of thrice a year, Submarine puts the trope in a very British frame. The analytic monologues of Oliver, the light, humour-infused surrealism, and the creative camera work really separates this movie from its peers.I found the acting a bit ambivalent. Yasmin Paige (Jordana) was outstanding in my opinion, she aced all the different attitudes of her character: Jordanas spleen and edge was just as authentic as her smiling and actually having fun, or caring deeply for her mother. Craig Roberts appealed to me aswell, Olivers monotonous or rather apathetic mood was very well played (especially the awkward smiles and angsty body language). The excellent chemistry of the two leads resulted in a very honest and lifelike portrayal of early teenage relationships, with all the cosmetics (e.g. the preconceptions about love, relationship roles and small mind games) on-point. However, the other characters, including Olivers parents and Graham, were forgettable in my opinion - their attitudes came off as boring. I felt like it was the main reason the marriage plotline was a bit stale for me.Submarine could have been one of my favorite movies, had I seen it in my teenage years; as an adult, it is still a very entertaining and refreshing take on the coming-of-age genre.
SnoopyStyle Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) is an awkward bullied teen in Wales. He is infatuated with classmate Jordana Bevan (Yasmin Paige) who recently got dumped by her boyfriend. Chips is his no-good prankster friend. After accidentally sending Zoe into a pond, Jordana takes Polaroids of her kissing Oliver to make her ex jealous. He convinces Jordana to help him lose his virginity. He fears his mother Jill (Sally Hawkins) is cheating on his father Lloyd (Noah Taylor) with new age guru Graham Purvis (Paddy Considine). He also fears that Jordana is allergic to her dog and then her mother is hospitalized with cancer. This is an imaginative coming-of-age movie. The interesting part is that Oliver and Jordana are likable despite some unlikeable actions. Oliver is a coward a lot times. He often makes the wrong choice. The two leads are still able to be appealing. This is Richard Ayoade's film and he brings plenty of visual tricks. In the end, the basic story is a teen flick with two cute kids and it's done with a fun touch.
gpenny94 I thought as a debut film it was pretty good but as a film it wasn't fantastic. It tried to do too much, it should of just stuck with a single theme, like it was too much of a coming of age idea for trying too evoke serious thoughts, probably like a 7/10. It should of went with more dark style humour and stuck with the serious side of the issues of mentality and love and left the coming of age as a sorta back ground theme.Richard Ayoade has done a good job directing on a low budget, although I was expecting a little more humour from him. I would recommend watching it if you are a fan of films but if you just want to watch a film to pass time I would keep looking as this is not the film for you. In conclusion, it was a good debut from Richard Ayoade as a director although the film is just a high average, future directed films by Richard Ayoade will hopefully only get better and he will put more of his style into it. Looking forward to his future films.
Christian Nelson Submarine is a coming of age teen romance, dramedy set in Wales directed by newcomer Richard Ayoade. The movie possesses far more charm than most adolescent dramedies while dealing with delicate topic's adolescents face such as romance and family deterioration. The movie revolves around 15 year old Oliver Tate as he undergoes a period of striving for meaning in life while attempting to keep his parents relationship alive. He develops a romantic relationship with a girl called Jordanna which aids to the progression of the story and Oliver's development. The movie is very quirky projecting a deadpan like humor consistently through out all the actors. The cinematography is beautiful due to the beautiful camera angles and the entertaining scenery. Even though a lot of the movie takes place in industrial places the imagery still looks stunning. A couple of scenes ran to long and I felt they could have been changed or switched for other scenes.Over all 7.5/10 good film definitely worth watching.
