The Deep Blue Sea Audience Reviews

Karry Best movie of this year hands down!
RipDelight This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
Bumpy Chip It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Juana what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Abbey Miskimen At first I was a little disappointed with the movie because it was confusing and it did not have very much back story. But when I started to watch again I realized the plot was jut developing in a different style then I am used to. Also skeptical people, like myself, who are wondering or hoping this is a good movie to watch don't be afraid to watch this movie it is very beautiful. To sum things up, this movie is a heart wrenching, tear jerking love story that is just hard to put into words. Truthfully I watched this movie because I am a big fan of Tom Hiddleston and his work as an actor. I hope you all find this review useful or benefiting and I also hope you find the movie as inspiring as I did.
blanche-2 Terence Davies rewrote some of "The Deep Blue Sea" for this film adaptation, released in 2011 and starring Rachel Weisz and Tom Hiddleston.Set in the 1950s, Weisz plays Hester, a young woman married to an older man (Simon Russell Beale). In the beginning of the film, we see her attempt suicide, and then we see what led up to it and beyond. We don't know much about her relationship with her husband. She seems fond of him, but not in love, and it's not clear why they married. In this film, he has a perfectly awful mother (Barbara Jefford) - she's not in the play, as I recall.Hester meets a returning air force pilot, Freddie Page (Hiddleston), and the two fall in love, or seem to -- clearly, like Anna Karenina, the physical side of the relationship is something all-encompassing and new to her, and she revels in it. She becomes obsessed with him and ultimately leaves her heartbroken husband, who refuses to give her a divorce. She moves in with her lover. It turns out the object of her affection is very self-involved, very shallow, and very restless for the good old days, loving to spend time in the pub with his cronies singing. "His favorite year is 1940," she tells her husband. He can't love her the way she needs to have him love her. "I can't be Romeo all the time!" he screams at his friend. Her suicide attempt is the last straw. He can't stay with her. This film has the look of the '50s, with his deep colors, and the hairstyles and clothing and mores are perfect. This is England after the war, trying to find its place in an altered world, like Freddie, who thinks being a test pilot in South America is just the ticket.I saw Rachel Weisz recently on stage with her husband Daniel Craig in Betrayal. The play was badly directed but I loved both of them. Weisz is so stunning in person -- absolutely gorgeous. Here she gives such a beautiful, gut-wrenching performance as a woman who can't live without passion. Hiddleston is excellent as a charming, upbeat man who doesn't delve deeply into things and when the going gets tough, runs out the door to the pub. He embodies this perfectly. Simon Russell Beale is a brilliant actor. Here it's obvious his character cares so much for Hester that he feels her pain and in the end, just wants her to be happy. But it's too late for that. The last scene is shattering -- Hester, desolate, looks out her window and sees life going on -- people on their way to work, children playing, people beginning their day...and the camera stops at a bombed out shell and stays there.Sounds like I loved it. I loved the emotion in it. I loved the acting. I actually wasn't crazy about the movie. First of all, I don't really understand the necessity of rewriting Terrence Rattigan. Seems a little presumptuous to me. Also, the filmed moved very slowly. Too slowly and seemed too long. Of course that could have been avoided if Davies hadn't added material.Because this is based on a play, the film has a theatricality about it, but Davies has opened it up. Definitely worth seeing for the acting.
Jackson Booth-Millard Not to be confused with the shark thriller with Saffron Burrows, Ice Cube and Samuel L. Jackson, I know this was a British made film, and the leading actress in it, but I didn't know anything about the plot or concept, so I was looking forward to it. Basically, set in around the 1950's, Hester Collyer (Golden Globe nominated Rachel Weisz) is a young woman married to the older High Court judge Sir William Collyer (Simon Russell Beale), and is having a passionate affair with handsome young former RAP pilot Freddie Page (Thor's Tom Hiddleston) who is still haunted by memories of the war, and he almost feels no fear and excitement in life anymore. Most of the story takes place in the space of one day, when in her flat Hester attempts to commit suicide, she fails to do so and recovers, both the affectionate but no-sexual affair and the constrained but comfortable marriage are played out together through flashbacks. Her affair is discovered, and leaves her regular life of relative luxury for a dingy life in a small London flat with her lover, he has awakened her sexually, but despite his thrill-seeking ways he cannot give her the same love and stability as her husband, but she cannot return to a life with passion, so there is a lot of dilemma. Also starring EastEnders' Ann Mitchell as Mrs. Elton, Jolyon Coy as Philip Welch, Karl Johnson as Mr. Miller, Harry Hadden-Paton as Jackie Jackson and Sarah Kants as Liz Jackson. Firsty, the title is derived from the lead female character's dilemma of being caught between the Devil and the deep blue sea – two equally undesirable situations, I think I know what that means, going with your conscience or going with your heart. Reisz gives a good performance as the woman caught between choosing her acceptable home life or having a bit more excitement with a new man, Hiddleston is also good as the man she embarks on an affair with, the story is relatively simple, based on a stage play, full of strain and heartrending material, it is well acted and produced, and certainly keeps you wondering where is is going, a terrific drama. Very good!
Hellmant 'THE DEEP BLUE SEA': Two and a Half Stars (Out of Five) Rachel Weisz has received much critical praise and award recognition (including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress) for her starring turn in this melodramatic romance based on the 1950's play, of the same name, by Terence Rattigan. In the film she plays the wife of a much older judge who begins an affair with a much younger former Royal Air Force pilot. It co-stars Tom Hiddleston (best known as Loki of 'AVENGERS' and 'THOR' fame) and Simon Russell Beale. It was directed and written for the screen by Terence Davies. Weisz's performance might be pretty good but the movie as a whole is just way too melodramatic and boring! Weisz plays Hester Collyer, the wife of High Court judge Sir William Collyer (Simon Russell Beale) in 1950 London. Hester is bored with her life married to William, who is almost ten years older than her. Then she meets former RAF pilot Freddie Page, who's haunted by memories of his service in World War II. Hester and Freddie are drawn to each other and Hester is excited by the passion she feels for the much younger man (over a decade younger). Her new romantic adventure causes a lot of trouble for everyone involved though and results in a suicide attempt. The movie is just oh so serious but I didn't feel any emotions for any of the characters. It's extremely tragic and dry and unbearable at times. Movies like this are just impossible for me to get into. I like emotional drama and will cry at a good tearjerker but I have to be given a good reason to care about the characters. Weisz might be really good in the film (as are the other actors) but I had a hard time acknowledging it as I could care less about her character. I'm sure there's an audience that will like and appreciate this film (like a lot of the critics) but it's not me.Watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcoZRlVFMzA
