Shawn Watson Back in October 1997 I was not too impressed by The Peacemaker. As the debut picture of then-new Dreamworks SKG it came across as a rather flat and forgettable combination of Jack Ryan and James Bond. Both Clooney and Kidman are horribly miscast and don't have much chemistry, though are not completely unwatchable. This was back in Clooney's head-lolling days when he thought that having a floppy neck made him look debonaire and charming. The opening to the movie is very well done and atmospheric. A steam locomotive charging through remote Russian darkness is hijacked by a second train sneaking up in its wake and a cargo of nine nuclear warheads are stolen with a tenth warhead detonated to cover the tracks (pun intended). Col. Tom Devoe (Clooney,sans-vertebrae) knows just about everyone in Russia and is given the mission of proving the nukes went missing and finding them before a terrorist strike can take place. As a pre-9/11 post-Bosnia movie it still feels quite topical and Marcel Iures is especially good as a broken man overcome by grief who will do anything to share his sadness with the world. It always stood out as a bold move and a powerful antagonist, it's just a shame that the film surrounding it is fairly bland for the most part. There's an amazing scene on a bridge and a tough car chase in Vienna, Mimi Leder doesn't shy away from blood and violence, and commits a fair amount of muscle to some scenes, but the movie just fizzles with the two leads failing to create any spark between them. Kidman could be replaced with a chest of drawers and it would have more charisma. A decent timewaster, but void of anything that would make it a classic.
drpavlovic1411 My review will be pretty short. Hollywood is nothing but the tool in the hands of the US foreign politics. Of course, the nuclear weapon is from the former Soviet Union, the country which should be depicted as the place without any control of its nuclear arsenal, and you can just go and take as many bombs as you want, for free. Even children in Russia plays with nukes, they are widely used as the play tool. Then, there is a SERBIAN GUY, of course, who will have his revenge to the West (which is REALLY guilty for the Bosnian and all wars in former Yugoslavia, because it recognized the rebellion republic as the independent states IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CIVIL WAR) for every Serb, Croat and Muslim death in the civil war. HOW STUPID! Serbian people are CHRISTIANS, that guy who wanted to blow up OUN center in New York, that SERB, it is not the part of his religion. He is going to hell for killing, it doesn't matter who he is going to kill. Why didn't Hollywood chose A MUSLIM? They go to Jenet, their version of paradise, if they die for the faith, for the right thing, for Islam. The end result, to revenge to the West for every Serb, Muslim and Croat would also gained. BUT NO! SERB MUST BE BAD BOYS, in every occasion. ALWAYS. Because we didn't want to obey to the West plans. We wanted to preserve our country, Yugoslavia (the same way as America wanted to stay complete, this is the reason why America had its civil war, to stop Confederation southern countries to go out of America), but the West didn't want that. Shame on you, Hollywood.
Johntechwriter A by-the-numbers actioner with good production values but a lame story. Kidman's character is an in-over-her-head analyst who is saved from her womanly weakness over and over by lanky, devil-may- care scallywag Clooney. Really, it's a ridiculously demeaning portrayal of a woman with authority, and Kidman adds not a whit of irony to her role. The plodding pace drains the energy from Hollywood's best-quality visuals and stunt work. Clooney's charm isn't enough to offset the wooden performances by those around him. Everybody marches in lock step through a series of ever more unlikely developments, toward a conclusion that can't come a minute too soon. This movie reflects its producers' contempt for its audience by giving us the clichés and stereotypes we've seen a hundred times before, and not a whit of originality to offset them. It takes a special kind of cynicism to waste this much money and talent, but director Mimi Leder is down to the job.
mattrochman The Peacemaker was a good and watchable film. The opening was solid and the structure of the story seemed interesting. Unlike other films of this genre, some intelligent and investigative plot lines unfolded. But ultimately the film should have steered clear of the plot line involving the Yugoslav character. Chasing the weapons, solid action, but running along side a rather silly plot about a man who seeks to avenge the deaths of his wife and daughter, and the war at the heart of it all, by detonating a nuclear bomb in the UN in New York. It became sentimental, far-fetched and sent the plot off course.I can only describe it as destabilising the main plot and I think that this is why a lot of people thought it was 'ok' but not great.
