Vinyan Audience Reviews

FeistyUpper If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
FirstWitch A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Hayden Kane There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Kinley This movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
Andy Steel For this film to even have a chance of working, the audience has to have some kind of connection with our grieving couple. Unfortunately we are never allowed to really get to understand their plight as we are whisked off to the jungle very quickly. Yes, there is some flashback stuff, but by then I was just beyond caring. She was clearly nuts and he just wanted to go home. I can't even say I liked the performances; I guess they were good, but because I really couldn't engage with the characters, I found it all far too 'arty' for my taste. Definitely not one that will get any repeat viewings from me and sadly not one I can recommend.SteelMonster's verdict: NOT RECOMMENDEDMy score: 3.2/10You can find an expanded version of this review on my blog: Thoughts of a SteelMonster.
D Vee Well, yeah. That says it.From the description I expected something along the lines of Children of the Corn, but in reality the scary feral children have very little to do with this movie, they just kinda show up at the end to rub mud on a naked woman's body. Most of the movie is about the mundane, anti-climatic journey to the home of these not so scary feral children(who we only get to see briefly) so a crazy wife can have them rub mud on her naked body. You see, a rich couple's son died not so long ago. The mom is obviously not coping well and going nuts as a result. But she convinces her husband to pack a bag with hundreds of millions of dollars so they can pay Asian gangsters and human traffickers to lead them to some forbidden Burmese district, just to make sure their son isn't alive. So for the first hour and 10 minutes people argue, there's lots of rain, someone gets shot, and there's a sex scene. 15 minutes before the closing credits, feral children show up acting kind of creepy, the husband gets killed, and yes I'll say it again... the children rub mud on the wife's naked body. And that's the end.
Leofwine_draca VINYAN is a grim and gloomy film that details a couple's spiralling descent into madness as they venture into a jungle hell in search of the child they lost during the south-east Asian tsunami in 2006. Like AGUIRRE, WRATH OF GOD and APOCALYPSE NOW before it, you know with VINYAN that there's going to be no happy ending, and much of the suspense is derived from the ever-worsening situation of the lead characters: watching them gradually leave society behind only to uncover unspeakable horrors in the jungle is never less than disturbing. The film boasts not one but two strong performances: Rufus Sewell is the straight man and Emmanuelle Beart (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE) his unstable wife, never the same since the loss of their child. Had other actors been cast in the roles I might have lost interest, but these two kept me watching. That's good, because the direction isn't that strong: Du Welz goes overboard in his attempts at style and I found his arty camera-work to be more of a hindrance than a help as the story progressed. Eventually, there's a twist at the end and the introduction of some visceral horror elements that I wasn't entirely happy about: to be honest, I didn't necessarily think that they had a place in this movie, but they're here all the same and at least they give a sense of closure to an otherwise meandering production.
simkuk What a load of rubbish!! Time I will never get back. Why do people make rubbish like this and call it art?Random scenes, people making irrational decisions, and a man following around a crazy woman around a forest. Stretched out scenes where your staring one someone's eyeball or something for like 10 - 15 seconds. People in the film who pop up and you get no connection with them. And really a WHACK storyline. Basically searching in a jungle with probably 1min of dialogue across 10 scenes maybe! Then loads kids pop and just stair at the couple!Load of rubbish, probably why Channel4 put it on at 12am! (Wish I could of gone back in time and read my own review before I watched this! LOL)
