AshUnow This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
KissEnglishPasto ..........................................................from Pasto,Colombia...Via: L.A. CA., CALI, COLOMBIA....and ORLANDO, FL Here's a sure bet: Out of millions of IMDb NF users, only a handful have ever been to Antarctica! A hostile environment provides a great backdrop for an Action/Crime/Drama/Thriller(IMDb genres) such as WHITEOUT. And Antarctica is just about as hostile as it gets! The film does get off to a really GREAT start. While in the theater, my enjoyment was genuine during 80 to 90% of the movie...Just after viewing, 7.5* was my rating...But after a few hours of cerebral ricocheting, I realized that perhaps I'd allowed my emotions a little too much free reign, permitting myself to be a partial victim of WHITEOUT's cinematic snow job!...YES.. "I was Snow-Blinded by the light!" Therefore, my revised rating is 6*! I'll explain: WHITEOUT does have a few top-notch scenes, where director Dominic Sena (Swordfish/GONE in 60 Seconds) really manages to work the "Hostile Environment" angle I mentioned at the beginning to its fullest! However, this very unique initial strength proves eventually to be a tremendous constraint on the overall film. During the first half of WHITEOUT there are several scenes where the safe haven home-base compound is left behind and helicopter trips are taken as part of an ongoing murder investigation. But the all-white outdoors soon gets a little drab and painfully bright on the eyes.During most of the last half of the film, weather conditions force everyone to pretty much stay inside the compound, which also provides rather austere viewer surroundings. This movie suffered from insufficient character development and over-reliance on several action-thriller-slasher scenes, which, although exciting and well-executed, were not enough to sustain WHITEOUT at a solid 8* for its duration! In any case, 6*.....ENJOY/DISFRUTELA! Any comments, questions or observations, in English or Español, are most welcome!
Davis P I was actually very excited to see this film, but oh my gosh it was detestably awful in every way! The acting was very bad. The plot made virtually no sense at all! I think the film's biggest problem though, was how it was soooo undeniably boring in every way! Nothing even slightly exciting or interesting happened in the entire movie! Kate Beckinsale wasn't a bad choice for the lead, but she just had crappy material to work with, I honestly feel sorry for every one of the actors that were involved in any way shape or form with this movie. I think it was definitely one of the worst films of 2009, if not the absolute worst! The dialogue was bad also, very week and lazy. Just trust me and don't go anywhere near this movie! You can watch almost anything and it would be better than Whiteout (2009). 1/10. Very bad movie!
scarabine This is a very nice little murder mystery that just so happens to be set in Antarctica. The idea of murder down there with all that cold makes it a little tricky for our villains, but they show that it can be done. It stars Kate Beckinsale and Tom Skerritt, so what's not to like. Sorry out there. The supporting cast is great. To me what having a good movie experience is the fact that actors have to believe in the story line, and if that doesn't happen-in my opinion- you have a bad movie i.e, Oblivion. The only problem I have with the movie it is where did the diamonds come from? I don't understand the haters. It is just a movie.
Wuchak Kate Beckinsale stars as a US Marshal at an international research station in Antarctica while Tom Skerritt plays the friendly doctor. The Marshal's about to leave the station as the Winter season sets in when she's forced to investigate a questionable death that becomes a murder investigation.Although the trailer hints of a supernatural film a la "The Thing," this is actually a mystery thriller with an "Ice Station Zebra" flair. Some of the plot turns are predictable and there's not enough character development, but the spectacular arctic locations and the effective filmmaking compel me to give this a decent grade.I said "arctic locations" because the film was shot in Manitoba, not Antarctica.Pay no mind do those who say this is a crappy film. If you're in the mood for a modern "Ice station Zebra" with SOME elements of "The Thing" then "Whiteout" should fill the bill. It won't blow you away or anything (except maybe for an early shot of Kate, lol) but it's a solid arctic mystery-thriller.The film runs 101 minutes.GRADE: B-
