A Different World is an American television sitcom which aired for six seasons on NBC. It is a spin-off series from The Cosby Show and originally centered on Denise Huxtable and the life of students at Hillman College, a fictional mixed but historically black college in the state of Virginia. After Bonet's departure in the first season, the remainder of the series primarily focused more on Southern belle Whitley Gilbert and mathematics whiz Dwayne Wayne. The series frequently depicted members of the major historically black fraternities and sororities. While it was a spin-off from The Cosby Show, A Different World would typically address issues that were avoided by The Cosby Show writers. One episode that aired in 1990 was one of the first American network television episodes to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

A Different World Audience Reviews

ChicRawIdol A brilliant film that helped define a genre
Glucedee It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.
Abbigail Bush what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
harry_crumb This show was nothing but the biggest crock of toilet waste before friends and I hate friends. Oh before I get started I am black. This show did nothing but try to teach lessons and not show us about people people making it, but black people making it. Come on now. I want to watch something that can make me laugh and in the same breath show something. This show got to serious. To serious about Race. Way to serious Oh black people this, and black people that. I thought about this, if white people had the same show talking about white people this, and white people that, it would be considered racist. True or false. I think true. The show was not informative it was irritating. Jasmine Guy's character was at least realistic cause if someone was a snob or hey they would be shunned and made fun of in a heartbeat. In a way I wish Cree Summers character would at least realize that hey I am half white so I can not just stick to being all African American cause no matter what she is half white. The writers worked my nerves with her character. They could have at least done something like how she adjusted in an all black college. Not just jumping in. That would have been something. Kadeem Hardison's character and Jasmin Guys character were the only one that at least developed. Everyone else stuck in the same rut. Oh I forgot Freddie ditched the hair and became serious. She was still a ditz. The show had a chance but no one did not take it to where it could have gone. The writers suck, the plots can go somewhere and if this was not monitored I would have been even meaner. This show gets no love.
lilc_28677 I miss the show so much, i loved to watch it everyday, even though i was born three years before it happened, i grew up to love the crazy Dwayne Wayne and miss beautiful Whitley gilbert, i loved to see those to flirt with each other and act like they did not like each other. i was happy when those to got married, and i loved Ron Johnson, especially when him and Freddie got together in the long run, but at first he fell for Kimberly Reese and was in a love triangle. i wish the show was still on or would have a reunion or do a remake of the show but with different characters on there, having the same personalities as the ones that were on there before. i would love to play Kimberly Reese because she is smart and pretty with a good head on her shoulders, i think i would like to play her because i am going into the medical field, i think they should bring the show back with a reunion. please ms. Allen you have got to make it happen. this show was great and i hate that it ended, but i enjoy watching the show even today, watching all the re-runs of the show it's awesome, especially when Dwayne falls for Whitley and she gets ready to marry Byron and Kim tries to stop her and Dwayne comes to the rescue, that's me favorite show.
DonFreidle This was one of the worst shows ever.A Different World was lost from the start without the Cos and his mighty sweater to save the day. Lisa Bonet is as worthless an actor as Lucas would be playing professional football. You never hear anyone ever complimenting anything other than her hair. Ooooh, girl, she's got nice hair! Uh,huh! Kadeem Hardison? The only good thing he's ever done is that Blackula Movie. Did he die in that movie? I sure hope so.I don't remember Marisa Tomei being in this show. I must have missed that episode. The only good thing about Sinbad is that he's not currently on TV. For god sakes, he's got BAD in his NAME! He's more spoiled than day old Sushi. "You ever notice how funny it is how people never know what they're gonna order at McDonalds?" No, SinBAD, I never noticed that. Why don't you elaborate. And Jasmine Guy. Jasmine, Jasmine, Jasmine. That girl is like Fran Drescher without the talent. A Different World. Now it's a Different Channel.
Brian Washington After a very rocky first season, this show not only went on to become an accurate portrayal of the Black college experience, it was also an accurate portrayal of college life in general. This show is one of the exceptions to the rule that drastic changes ruin great series. During the first season, it became obvious that Lisa Bonet couldn't carry the show and that the real star of the show was Jasmine Guy, whose character of Whitley Gilbert will always be remembered as one of the all time greats. Also, even though the show was set in a college, you never saw the kids actually attending class. All this changed during the second season when both Bonet's character of Denise Huxtable and Marissa Tomei's character of Maggie were written off the show and were replaced by Freddie, played by Cree Summer, and Kim, played by Charnele Brown. But perhaps the big change was that not only did you see the kids attending classes, but the show became more issue oriented. Issues like date rape, AIDS, domestic violence, apartheid and teen pregnancy were all covered in this show and helped to make it more than a "Cosby Show" spin-off. Also, besides the above mentioned characters, Kadeem Hardison's portrayal of Dwayne Wayne helped make this show great.
