The year is 2040 and the galaxy is flourishing with several colonies and advanced technology. AI is near perfection and the current top idol is the near-completed Virturoid Idol Sharon Apple. All that is missing are her actual feelings, which instead are supplied by Myung Fang Lone. Sharon's debut concert is on planet Eden, where at the same time, fighter pilots Isamu Dyson and Guld Bowman battle over air superiority for the Supernova Project. Isamu, Guld and Myung were once childhood friends, but after an accident seven years ago, they went their own separate ways. With Myung back in the picture, the old disputes are once again awakened. And when an unstable and illegal AI technique is installed in Sharon, the situation is worsened.

Macross Plus Audience Reviews

Karry Best movie of this year hands down!
Acensbart Excellent but underrated film
Catangro After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.
Bob This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
Donald F Just for clarity's sake, I should say I watched the movie version, not the OVA. I heard its better, but not all that different.Macross Plus is only slightly above average. Its a bit more ambitious than the typical mecha. The animation is high quality, and it tries to be a character-focused anime, with few fight scenes. It kind of succeeds. There's tension in our love triangle, and some character depth. I didn't find the character's strong or likable enough to support a relatively slow movie. They're not awful...I guess they're just not my taste. :/ A bigger problem is the AI element to the story. Its pretty average, and takes time away from developing the relationships. Its alright, though. And the few fight scenes are very good. At least two moments will stick with me through the years. You can give it a shot.
jmalmsten the Movie edition of the "ultimate edition" is probably done with the master VHS version, as it is not exactly "real" 5.1, more like up-mixed stereo audio and the subtitling is hard-coded to the image. Making it look like a copy of my Macross Plus Movie VHS cassette.but as this is the only version that seems to exist officially subtitled ('m guessing there are some fan-subs circulating the 'net), and the fact that DVD's doesn't suffer from the usual wear & tear of magnetic cassettes it's a nice buy after all.my own preferences on the subject OVA or Movie: well the OVA is more of the character story and is approximately 3 hrs long with more back-story (what Isamu did before blasting down at New Eden is shown for example) and more stuff in general as they weren't hindered by the running time of a single movie, so I like that version a lot.But the movie version is all out action and adventure and not only down-cut but in some scenes reanimated and expanded (Gulds eyes, nudity and stuff like that) and is very trimmed down to basics. I like those enhanced and added parts too as it makes it much more than a down-cut movie version of a series. So basically it's a draw. so buy both! It's very interesting to see what the director Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Shamploo etc.) brought to the macross universe. And outshines the recent CG-filled prequel Macross Zero to great extent.
omega1 The first time I saw it was when Teletoon ran it one week a few years ago, and I have loved this movie deeply ever since. Awesome animation, great mecha fights, lots of dramatic stuff, great soundtrack, cool villain, and the Macross Consortium's Superdimensionalfortress! What more do you want? Not -all- is well though, and if there is any problem I'd have to voice about the movie, it would be the dialog. Though the dub is very good compared to most others, the dialog is sometimes very confusing or just silly, like Isamu's classic "I don't want to eat you up, little man. Stay out of my way".Overall, though, it's worth a watch. Definitely.
pchan Macross Plus is one of the best japanese animated movies (called "anime"). It has all: good characters, good story, good battles, good animation and good music. The animation is very good, with parts of computer animation. As all the Macross movies and series, Macross Plus is "dominated" by singers. Yoko Kanno's music is simply beautiful. This movie wouldn't be the same without it. It changes from tecno to acoustic and it suits perfectly with each moment. If you haven't see an anime film in your life, Macross Plus is perfect to begin with.Ah! You don't need to see the Macross serie to understand it (the movie happens about 30 years after the serie)
