Info

The Affair explores the emotional effects of an extramarital relationship between Noah Solloway and Alison Lockhart after the two meet in the resort town of Montauk in Long Island. Noah is a New York City schoolteacher with one novel published (book entitled A Person who Visits a Place) and he is struggling to write a second book. He is happily married with four children, but resents his dependence on his wealthy father-in-law. Alison is a young waitress trying to piece her life and marriage back together in the wake of the tragic death of her child. The story of the affair is told separately, complete with distinct memory biases, from the male and female perspectives.

The Affair Audience Reviews

More Review
Stevecorp Don't listen to the negative reviews
Hayden Kane There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Tobias Burrows It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
Zlatica One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Zorion-aku That was one of the best sequences in the series, I don't know whether it was Amy Irving's acting, the revelations by Cole or the view of Morro Bay!
mykidshavefur I absolutely loved the first two seasons. I was obsessed! But, unfortunately, the third season was awful. The prison guard stuff, the stabbing, the French lady and her husband, Vik, the mother-in-law, Luisa, the daughter's gross boyfriend, Noah's family... all of it. It was just painful to watch. Hopefully, season 4 can return to it's previous glory. If not, hopefully it will be the final season. Then we might be able to remember it fondly, instead of watching it die a slow death.
garywbrown38 Presently watching Series 4 , having seen this series from the start. Great storylines based upon an initial affair with the lead Dominic West and a waitress in US. Storylines unwind as the years progress and the characters inter mingle and argue love and fight. Great "Must Watch" series with first class acting by all the main characters
punyabrota-97984 I just finished watching all the three seasons in less than a week. I guess that at the outset establishes the level of addiction, intrigue and subtle expressions of an otherwise known theme. Some key aspects which struck attention are:1. Depiction of the same story from perspectives of different participating characters...however, this is no depiction of dramatic irony which has been used extensively since early days of movies and plays. In other words, it still does not quite reveal what the reality was to the audience. Rather - it leaves the audience to think what may have actually happened. Or could it be (given the intense psychological flavour) promoting a more fundamental philosophy - "life is all about how you perceive it and nothing is real" (remember Morpheus in Matrix?). 2. While an extra marital affair in any part of the world is always stained with stigma and we talk about immediate to long term repercussion, consequences and what not - there was perhaps a deliberate delay in introducing it over here, may be almost till the middle of second season. It seemed to promote the modern day principle of "live the moment", and except for minor frictions things seemed to be going on fine for the principal protagonists - Noah & Alison. As an added benefit (and being depicted as a struggling author), he did get good content for his novel which eventually gave him the taste of first success. 3. The real interpersonal dynamics unfolds more towards the end of season two and may be the whole of season three. The dominance of the physical aspect of the affair, pushed out the imperative elements of soul bonding (not just for Noah & Alison) - which only gets reflected more and more when differences surface and apparently there is no grounding. 4. The concept of residual relationship is also elegantly drawn. There is always a tendency to gravitate back to the old "failed' relationship with a conviction or anticipation of better grounding or solace in a moment of melancholy or despair. 5. The third season probably talks a lot about Noah's guilt surfacing up. May be in his conscious mind he is still not able to accept that he did anything wrong and hence keeps on hallucinating about this in-prison cop who tortures him during his imprisonment and apparently this punishment is because of a very different reason - just being jealous of Noah being a better swimmer (being shown as friends in their school days, Noah and this cop that is) Moreover, this torture never happens in reality as is being revealed later on. Noah was more on a self injury mode, to the extent of hurting his own neck. May be deep down in his subconscious, he knew it - but the manifestation into the conscious self was quite complex and drifted from reality. 6. Last scene of season three ends with a theme - all differences, anger, frustration, irritation is wiped out, but along with it is the warmth and love too. Thus on a Christmas Eve, Helen just waves Noah from her window. Was downgrading of intense close relations to a mere acquaintance the ultimate penalty for Noah (apart from his hallucination disorders and associated sufferings) ?Looking forward to season 4, when it lands on Netflix.
