Info

Meet the Donnelly brothers: Tommy, Jimmy, Kevin and Sean. There is nothing these four Irish brothers wouldn't do to protect each other, and for them that means lying, cheating, stealing and, occasionally, calling the cops. Narrated by wannabe gangster Joey "Ice Cream," this gritty series bears witness to the Donnelly brothers' sudden involvement in organized crime, focusing on how they go from boys to mobsters, and showing how their new life affects their relationships with friends, family and lovers.

The Black Donnellys Audience Reviews

Actuakers One of my all time favorites.
Platicsco Good story, Not enough for a whole film
Kaydan Christian A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Bob This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
John Raymond Peterson Read the brief IMDb plot summary and check out the, so far, four critics. Perhaps read a few reviews of opposing views and then you may not want to watch it. The only positive indication that this may be a series worth watching is the so far 8.6 rating from IMDb users; my other sources of reference for ratings were not that generous. The best way to determine if it is a series you might like is to watch the first episode and judge for yourself. I was fortunate to do just that; I concluded I wanted to watch the whole thing, and did.Comparing it to anything else is going to mean outlining one's opinion about two reviews , The Black Donnellys and whatever else it is being compared to, hardly conducive to an objective assessment. If the review was to make some scene or feature/key moment comparison, that's entirely different. I prejudged it, and this is no better, because I did not care for the cast to begin with. I also would have bet a fair bet that such a series would not last on an American national network for all the constraints placed upon any series with potential violence. The series stood a far better chance of survival ( for at least two seasons) had this been produced for cable network. The terrific Deadwood, Rome and The Sopranos series could not be shown on American national network, too much of it would have been snipped by the censors for being too violent or politically incorrect; director or actors having to ply their art in that environment will not likely produce their best work. The lead character played by Jonathan Tucker is not as colourful as the other three brothers; whether Tucker's interpretation is to blame or whether it is the part itself doesn't matter. Tom Guiry and the character of Jimmy played by him is the catalyst for all the action. There is plenty of action and, to my satisfaction, it does not feel like it was a mandatory thing, part of a formula TV production; story-wise it was inevitable and that nuance makes a difference for the enthusiasts of the movie genre. The other two brothers in the series help support and move the story along. The series is not ambiguous about its theme, blind brotherly love and family loyalty, and not shy expressing its consequences. What pleased me most about the series was the narration by a character, Joey, very well played by Keith Nobbs, and the pretext for that narration; it's a concept that worked well. I give the series a lesser and fairer rating and acknowledge I liked it, but I won't go out of my way to promote it or recommend it. I recommended the two "Boodock Saints" movies, enough amateur movie critic karma damage for this reviewer.
Filmmaker10 This show was amazing. The only problem with this show was that it was not very consistent. It would have one incredible show then some OK ones, then a great one again. The first episode was incredible. I loved it. The music was very appropriate, the acting was pretty good. The storyline was incredible. The last episode made me angry that they canceled the show. It was great, and it left me wanting more. Paul haggis leaves the story at a compelling but horrible cliffhanger. Bottom line is the show was completely worth watching. The show had great portions of drama, action, suspense, and romance. I think the greatest part of the show was the loyalty to the family. I always thought that the idea of four brothers was really good. They never give up on each other, and always trust each others decisions, even though sometimes they don't agree.
crbowles The first episode was a bit slow with a few too many characters to be introduced in one episode which made it difficult to follow. But episode by episode each character shows real development. Mainly focusing on four brothers. Tommy is the Sensible responsible one, Kevin the Gambler, Shaun the Innocent one and Jimmy the impulsive and reckless one. Also there are a number of perpiheral characters including the boys mother, Irish and Italian Mobsters, an old man with alzheimers, and Girls from the block. And the whole thing is woven together by often witty narration by Joey Ice Cream who is often seen is prison telling the tales to various Police, Priests, nurses and lawyers. Overall a great show that only seems to get better now that NBC has axed the show and made the show available on the web. Overall a great show If you get the a chance to see it don't judge it till you've seen more than a couple of episodes.
aretnapcfh if your reading these comments most likely you have already seen the show and have decided to find out why it wasn't on this week and isn't scheduled for next week... but if that isn't the case i'll let you know... this show has everything you want.... drama, action, and even some romance...its one of the best shows on television!... every week it leaves you wanting more! one of the only shows both me and my fiancé can watch together and its a break from all the reality TV and 1/2 hr comedy sitcoms.... seems like it should be more of a show for a cable channel than for basic TV... the story line is great the way it is.. but with cable it would probably give more room for more in-depth details to the killing, drugs and sex going on... its like a new sopranos... only better!!!!! unfortunately if you haven't caught it yet nbc has pulled the show.... the only way to see it now is on the nbc website or to download the shows from itunes.... take a chance and check it out... you wont be disappointed!!!!! we gotta save this show!!!check out the message boards and find out how you can help!!!!!!
