Info

Betty Suarez is smart, tough and tenacious, but also sensitive and loving. She hopes these skills will help her to get a job within the Meade Publishing Corporation. The fact that she isn’t traditionally attractive initially keeps her from getting hired by fashion bible, Mode. The magazine, however, is in flux, with power-hungry executives vying for dominance. Hoping to control the situation, the publisher gives his inexperienced son, Daniel, the position of Editor-in-Chief. He hires Betty as Daniel’s assistant after catching him in a compromising position with his secretary on his first day on the job. After a tough start, in which Daniel tries to force Betty into quitting by treating her terribly, he realizes her worth and the two pair up to be an effective team.

Ugly Betty Audience Reviews

Solemplex To me, this movie is perfection.
Jeanskynebu the audience applauded
Frances Chung Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
Isbel A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
michaeledward1212 Ugly Betty is one of my all-time favorite shows, the first season is still one of my favorite seasons, and in my opinion one of the best seasons of television ever produced. The way it blended telenovela sensibilities with the American sitcom was genius. I think the show is extremely underrated, by audiences and critics alike. The user score here is a testament to that, and while Ugly Betty might not be everyone's cup of tea it accomplished most of what it set out to do, and it did it well. Although I think the first season and a half are excellent, near perfect television, the show floundered a bit in its third season, where a new locale and crew changed the tone and a post-writers strike group of writers took the series into new, and sometimes bizarre territory. I must say that Patricia Field taking over costumes from Eduardo Castro was extremely noticeable, and the quality was still high, but the show never matched its soap opera antics of its first season, instead it become a lighter family comedy with some dramatic elements thrown in, and it still worked. The thing that amazes me every time I rewatch the show is how timeless it feels, how groundbreaking it was, and how it paved the way for so many shows, and originated so many trends. I don't think Ugly Betty truly gets enough credit for what it did, blending comedy, drama, heartfelt storylines with grittier elements, transgender storylines and gay youth representation, in a show centered on a Mexican-American family no less. Today there are shows like Pose, where the cast is made up of mainly transwomen, shows like Jane the Virgin that feature telenovela storytelling mixed with comedy, and a noticeable trend in sitcoms to feature more long arc story structure and greater continuity, all while including some more dramatic elements. At the time of its release, Ugly Betty was a contemporary to The Office, 30 Rock, Glee and other mainstream sitcoms that kept the tone light and the stakes lower. Meanwhile, Ugly Betty wasn't afraid to feature surreal moments and serious stories about coming out, murder and alcoholism. Ugly Betty will forever be one of my favorite shows. And although it's never gotten the credit it deserves, its influence lives on in the risks taken by the shows that came after it, and the people who were touched by it.
Al Rodbell This long time New Yorker had an instant connection with this program. When Betty first told Marc that she had just graduated from Queens College, I had to laugh at his sarcastic reply, "That's a terrific value school." From that moment on this fellow grad of the very same "value school" had felt a kinship with Betty.Of course the plot twists were often over the top, but I was fascinated by it; and my wife and I looked forward to the days that it popped up on our recorder. Sure it was preposterous, but the affection of the Suarez family, along with everyone who set foot in that little house in Queens, was as genuine as television can get.I had a bet with my wife that in the final episode Daniel would go to London and ask Betty to marry him. I should have recognized that the quality of the writing, the human reality under the wackiness would not allow such a clichéd ending. He did go to London, and he was going through just enough of a personal transformation that one could very well anticipate that over time, things could end with them being together. But then again, maybe not. Ugly Betty is a program that didn't make it in Germany and other countries. But this Country, with all it's failures, all its faults, has gone through a monumental social revolution over the last half century, that happens to coincide with my adult life. So, it could portray a young man whose entrance into adulthood is a dance with another boy; no longer an absurdity, but while still a stretch in a Mexican ethnic household, not so much to be unacceptable to a large audience. The country has changed, and this program, one that I will sorely miss, chronicled this transformation.
moviesampink I always look forward to watching Ugly Betty every week, it's my top favorite show on television. Everything about is so inspiring and i love it that it's in New York. I love the message it is sending to everyone. That it's okay to be yourself and to follow your dreams. Ugly Betty has the best cast, everyone in it is so amazing, funny, beautiful and multi-talented. Love the characters especially Wilhelmina, love the drama and all of the locations are beautiful. The soundtrack is awesome. I love the witty dialog, the one-liners are completely hilarious, the mode's offices are so cool, i would love to work there. The acting, i don't know what to say about it because it leaves me speechless. The acting is that good, everybody does an incredible job as all of their characters. Ugly Betty is the best show on television without a doubt and it will go far with all the changes in season four. So far i am loving season four and i am huge Ugly Betty fan. It's amazing, watch it. I would give it a 10/10 rating.
insomniac_rod I need to be honest towards this t.v. series. Before watching it I was very skeptical because a series with the same name was very successful here in México but it was a piece of crap. So I thought, "Salma Hayek and other investors bought the rights to make the American version but the dialogs, situations, and even jokes will be the same crap".My sister bought the first season and she made me watch it against my will. To my surprise, I found the show to be extremely well done, witty, charming, and even very funny. The acting is probably what makes it 50% watchable but the overall atmosphere made up by settings, music, art direction and pacing is what makes this t.v. show a huge triumph. Also, Betty's family and situation in the country is the closet thing to reality. So as a plus, we have a strong and funny social message.America Ferrara steals the show as Betty. She's very funny and keeps the pacing correctly. She was born to play the character. Also, I need to be honest about this...I won't be watching this show regularly because I have other favorite shows but the impression that it left me with the first season made me show respect to it.And for those who say that this show will make many women sad because of the jokes towards an "ugly" woman like Betty; I suggest to calm down. Everything on the show is funny (even the over the top gay actors, ugh) and done without cruelty.
