Juana what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Philippa All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
Tejas Nair I don't care if it references "The Beautiful Mind" or "1408," because 404 is one example that Bollywood is treading somewhere good. The cast performance is scintillating, so is the camera work. But I am disappointed with the editing & screenplay. The latter could've been more polished when telling a tale involving psychology & thrills. Talking about spirits & hallucinations, the plot is pure suspense till the last minute. With supports from huge social causes & rendering the actual situation of newbies in medicine colleges, drives the movie as a great entertainer.BOTTOM LINE: Recommended due to its absolute story-telling & spine- chilling climax. You might want to watch the ending twice to completely understand what the writers intend. Bravo! Can be watched with a typical Indian family? Aman Grover First of all , let me start by saying that I have seen many good to epic movies , but never cared to review them. But only this film inspired me to write my first review. The whole plot of the movie and the acting of actors is what made me watch the whole movie. The story of the film is really intriguing. I just feel pity for the director that this film will remain little known to the movie lovers. The movie starts with the protagonist Abhimanyu starting his higher education in a medical college, coming to the hostel. He comes to know of the creepy room 404 where one student(Gaurav) committed suicide. And then some seniors ragging him. Only Abhimanyu is resistant to ragging and he also stays in the room 404(which has been opened after 3 years). The seniors tells him that the boy's(Gaurav) ghost haunts in that room. Then the main story starts when Abhimanyu starts seeing Gaurav, and his teacher tells him that its only in his mind and not real. Is it really in his mind or is it the ghost of Gaurav? Decent horror flick. I will give it a 8/10 for such brave attempt.
gauravthemystery 404 is one of those kind of movies whose fate is decided by the Indian Box Office - dominated by mutiplex and masala movies - much before its release. Though its box office collections were not good, 404 has impressed critics and that small sectional of Hindi movie audience who would like to experiment with something new.404, is a psychological thriller (name given nowadays to a film which combines the elements of mystery and psychology) which although is not a new genre, but has remained largely untouched in Hindi film industry, due to lack of success. The director Prawal Raman is bold enough that even after his repeated failures (Darna Zaroori Hai, Darna Mana Hai, Gayab) has remained loyal to this genre, and this time with an unknown starcast has produced something worth watching. The plot has many twists and turns, which keeps the audience involved till the very end. The climax is the USP of the movie and produces the same "Shock" about which Robert McKee speaks in Spike Jonze directed "Adaptation". Nishikant Kamat as Professor Anirudh has once again impressed after his solid job in Mumbai Meri Jaan. Although I found the acting of the others weak, the crew can be excused as they are not much experienced. The only thing which was a letdown was Satish Kaushik. He was highly underutilized. Even Imaad Shah could have done more. But as Robert McKee says, if you can shock your audience, and they say 'wow' in the end, nothing else matters. Coming to my main point, its a pity that our industry rejects these sort of movies and such movies beg for screen space in mutiplexes, where only money speaks. Crap movies such as Ready has become a blockbuster whereas such cleverly made movie don't even get sufficient takers. Anyways, for those who constantly criticize Hindi Film Industry for using the same old clichéd storyline and not coming up with anything new, this movie can be a good watch.
zacker56 It may seem to be a very good movie, kudos to the director for trying to dream big, but please don't make a copy (however unrelated as you may say it is) to English movies. The concept of story telling is a basic skill without any limits kept but only your imagination. However, the director, the screenplay writer and other story writers are stunted in their imaginations as they have resorted to take up a good horror movie like 1408 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0450385/ and then just making minimal changes (so as to avoid a copyright issue) and presenting it to the public. Do things with innovation then even the old horror movies with ghost bungalows, and witches and omens and possessed souls will seem better. So, even though this may seem to be a good movie to lot of people, the inspiration with which it was made (and never credited) makes me put this at 1/10.
