Robert Duvall is a top of the line actor and close to being a favorite if I had one. He seems to enjoy character parts and was really good in the Hemingway movie.This movie I didn't really want to watch figuring it was predictable -good old boy goes to Mexico and raises hell. It was that and then some. Many years ago while in El Paso I use to cross over into Zaragosa by myself to roam the dark haunts always feeling it was best to keep a low profile,this movie goes against my personal beliefs. The voice of Duvall's character in this movie can also be heard in the movie Geronimo.In that movie his character was from Arizona and I couldn't help to remember him while watching a night in old Mexico. His character in the Geronimo movie had a famous line...A Texan is about the lowest form of white man there is . Seems unusual he ended up playing one.

You can say whatever you want about Robert Duvall but he always delivers in a movie. I don't think I ever saw him playing bad. And in A Night In Old Mexico he again puts down a very good performance playing the grandfather of Gally (played by Jeremy Irvine). Jeremy Irvine and Angie Cepeda are good in their roles as well but still it is Duvall that makes this movie worth watching. The story is well written, it's like watching everything a little bit in slow motion but there is enough action and good dialogs to keep you entertained. You feel for the old man that doesn't want to end his life in a tin can. I certainly did enjoy this movie, like any other with Duvall in it.

I liked the ending.The ONLY criticism I would make was not showing more 'cattle' and a Cow-dog - if not a horse or ATV.A friend of mine who's a small cattle rancher up here in Martinez CA, is 75 yrs, and is going through chemotherapy for prostate, (altho' I think it's the type of tuberculosis you evidently can get from cattle which is treated by chemo!) he had to hand over the cattle operation to his ranch hand ( a Mexican who's waiting for his wife from Mexico so he can stay in the cottage on the property ) - while he recoups (hopefully) at his brother's; I recommended it to him, I think he would feel encouraged. … He's very hard working, fixes everything himself; He was a former fisherman in Alaska - and a carpenter after that. Besides being as gruff as the character Duvall played , he's the best person you ever met - kindly but strong - and smart as a whip still. Ididn't like the 'gun' scene - that's why I had to debate about recommending it to him, but I did recommend it to him. (I'm the girl friend he ends up with! - so that was "true to life" - Writers, how did you know!?!

A Night in Old Mexico was well-received in its North American Premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. Some of our great actors age poorly and take easy money making roles (such as Robert DeNiro in Last Vegas and the Meet the Parents series), but Robert Duvall is still doing some serious acting. In A Night in Old Mexico, he plays a character that is likely not that different from himself. He plays a crazy old Texan united with his wayward grandson and looking to have a last thrill ride in south of the border. In some ways, the role is reminiscent of Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman. The thrill ride takes a few unbelievable twists and turns, but it is still enjoyable to see how much spunk the old fellow still has. I'm not sure this will get much of a wide release, but if you have a chance check it out. Duvall remains a worthwhile entertaining old curmudgeon in old Mexico.
