Joe Slaader is a mysterious mountain man being held in the Ulster County Asylum after the brutal murder of his family. Edward Eischel, a young intern, sees something more than just an inbred monster in this new inmate, however. Instead, he sees him as the harbinger of some greater and much darker force. With bodies piling up, his job in jeopardy, and his sanity hanging in the balance he gives in to his obsession with tapping into Joe's hidden power, risking all that he has along the way.

Beyond the Wall of Sleep Audience Reviews

Blucher One of the worst movies I've ever seen
Noutions Good movie, but best of all time? Hardly . . .
Gutsycurene Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.
Brendon Jones It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
JoeB131 And then I forgot and rented it again.Okay, so this is one of the few Lovecraft Adaptations that didn't star Jeffrey Combs. I would say this mess is Lovecraft flavored, but lacks actual elements of Lovecraft horror. An inbred idiot is brought to an asylum, and is found to be the conduit to a extra-dimensional horror that can be unleashed by the mad experiments of a young doctor. The problem with this film is that while it has William Sanderson in it, actually performing his lines like he thought about his character (one dimensional as it was), the rest were dinner theater rejects engaged in massive overacting that would make Shatner cringe. The dialog and action are just excuses to put gore into the movie, where they confusingly keep switching back and forth from color to black and white for no good reason.Again, there were some good actors in the MINOR roles who were actually kind of okay. Sanderson, the fat guy who played the sane doctor. But the main characters were hammy and awful and frankly, you didn't care about the script at all.
electronicoffee I love horror movies; I love even BAD horror movies.I've only said this about two movies before (see title of post) but this movie is F(_)CKING UNWATCHABLE. I literally had to FWD scenes on my DVD player just to get through (yes, just to skim) the movie. It made me want to open my eye with a socket wrench. My freshman semester of college (intro to video) work was better. I was totally fooled by the cover of the video, whoever did that cover was an AMAZING work of art :D But the movie is nothing like it.More than a waste of money, this was a waste of time, and effort. I could say more, but it would be just wasting even more time.
Spent Bullets Beyond the Wall of Sleep was written and directed by Barrett J. Leigh and Thom Maurer, based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft. The title for this movie is pretty suitable since it won't take long before the viewer is behind the wall of sleep themselves. The story is remarkably bad and for anyone who usually loves Lovecraft adaptations this will be nothing but a huge let down.William Sanderson stars as Joe Slaader, and it is clear here that the character actor must not be receiving a large enough lunch check from the popular HBO series. Slaader is a madman living in the Catskill Mountains in 1908. After being apprehended holding the severed head of a family member, he is committed to a local mental asylum. It is there that Slaader is poked and prodded by the unprofessional staff of doctors and scientists. However, young intern Edward (Fountain Yount) sees more than a household loon in Slaader. He sees an evildoer with the power to cause certain anarchy. Before long, Slaader will have the power to unleash all hell on the institution. The film jumps back and forth between B&W and color and flashes disconnected images at the viewer at a pace that makes a strobe light look like a lava lamp. While the sudden glimpses of extreme gore and mysterious juxtapositions create an immediate sense of nightmare, the technique becomes rather tiring over the long run. The visual sense remains the film strong point, though, as the performances are amateurish, pitched far too far over the top, with the dialogue shouted rather than delivered, said dialogue careening wildly between modern vernacular and pseudo-Lovecraftian verbosity. Deliberate camp in the vein of Re-Animator perhaps? I'm not sure. It didn't work for me (nor for anyone else), there is no talent birthing here. Individual moments of the film would have made superbly nightmarish short features, but thats about it.
ericxton OK, this movie is hard to put into words...i believe the point of the film was to make YOU feel insane....its very jumpy and has good points ...i believe the "acting" was meant to be very dry and non emotional ..like you were reading the movie as apposed to watching it .... very poetic actually .... and thats why liked it ...i rented it out of curiosity and me, my woman and buddy spades-1999(user name on here)watched it one night, and he asked me "man, whats with you and all these weird, making no sense movies you put me through" ...lol...i don't believe him or my woman liked the movie, i however thought it was something .... I'm not sure what... but it spoke to me in a weird way ... and very few movies have done that so ill be buying it one day ...not for the $19.99 that hastings has been asking for it but a couple of bucks sure ..lol....if your wanting to watch something that will leave you saying "what did i just see?" then go for it, it does have things to offer an open mind ...(4), vocalist GOD IN A MACHINE
