Company Man Audience Reviews

Nessieldwi Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.
Odelecol Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
Allison Davies The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Philippa All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
Lee Eisenberg I had never heard of "Company Man" when I started watching it, but I nearly laughed myself to death. This story of a CIA agent involved in several botched plots to assassinate Fidel Castro hits all the right nerves. It starts with a committee interviewing agent Alan Quimp (Douglas McGrath) about why the Bay of Pigs invasion failed. Quimp then goes into the story. In the late '50s, his wife Daisy (Sigourney Weaver) wanted him to get a better job, so he pretended to be a CIA agent. The real CIA is about to come after him for doing this, but then he helps a Soviet dancer (Ryan Philippe) defecate - I mean defect! - to the US. So, the CIA sends Quimp to Cuba to find Agent X. During Quimp's stay in Cuba, the revolution triumphs. So, the US government sets about trying to get rid of Castro however possible. Sure enough, every scheme invariably goes belly up, and flamboyant ex-dictator Fulgencio Batista (Alan Cumming) isn't much help.Like many movies, this one shows that comedy is the best way to show politics.* The main humor springs from the bungling of every plot to eliminate Castro - and subsequent embarrassment to the people trying to get rid of him - but there's also Quimp's obsession with perfect grammar, plus many of the lines coming from Woody Allen and Denis Leary...plus a little thing about John Kennedy. They must have had fun filming this movie! Of course, the main thing that one might derive from this is that it's the ultimate embarrassment for the US government to maintain this hostile policy towards Cuba (from what I've read, it sounds as though the Bush administration considers it more important to overthrow Castro than to find Osama bin Laden). It was one thing to have this policy during the Cold War, but today? I mean really. All in all, a really funny one. Also starring Jeffrey Jones, John Turturro and Heather Matarazzo.*Other such movies include "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", "Dr. Strangelove", "Wag the Dog", "Bulworth" and "Fun with Dick and Jane".
Thulemanden An energetic and entertaining movie with some pretty original scenes although much of the plot is from real life.Weaver is doing a fine and wholehearted job trying to grab the main role, but the role is more suited for Goldie Hawn.Cumming is delivering a 100% effort as general Batista which also threatens to steal the main part. The role of Fidel Castro is also well performed.McGrath as office Quimp on the other hand is weakly covered, although I grant he can sing.Surprisingly the uncredited Woddy Allen appears but is more Woody Allen than being the role he covers. Woody is totally out of sync with the movie and does as he pleases apparently. The mission of the movie could be to criticize CIA's secret missions for the US and does a fine job of that. The problem with the movie seem to be the instruction alone.A promise of a follow-up, this time in Vietnam is made in the end.
Christopher Taylor (Yodelling Llama) In terms of the "quirky" feeling, intentionally haphazard plot, and amusing-yet-one-dimensional characters, I was reminded of some of Woody Allen's earlier work. And I love early Allen. In terms of the production value, the editing, and the strength of the direction, I was reminded of later Allen. I like later Allen, but it is not the pinnacle of filmmaking by any measure. Nevertheless, I fail to see how anyone would place Company Man on the lower end of scale. It is a very funny movie. It trips over itself at times, but there are some great ideas here, and I was pretty consistently laughing throughout. Perhaps people were turned off by the loose craft and high level of script/actor dependence--apart from the over-abundance of locations, this film might have worked better as a play--but I really enjoyed myself. 8/10.
Tasos Tz. 'Company Man' is absolutely old style. The jokes, the acting, even the story. Douglas McGrath is a cross between Bob Hope and Jack Lemmon, while Sigourney Weaver's acting is reminiscent of something from the 50's.In fact, all the cast is absolutely magnificent and it consists of Paul Guilfoyle, John Torturro, Alan Cumming, Ryan Phillippe and the fabulous Anthony LaPaglia as Fidel Castro.Of course, for once more, no one is able to appreciate this movie, probably because of the absence of toilet humor and stupidity. Classy humor is something that people don't care about any more, they want rudeness, shallowness and indecency. So, we have 'Scary Movie' scoring more in imdb that a movie with Woody Allen in it. That's great! That's really great!10/10
