TrueHello Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
gotohoward I could barely watch it. I'm into film, and fascinated with Kobain and Nirvana. His death circumstances are questionable by some. This film is 95% watching what amounts to a bum wandering around. I'm not sure I even think Grunge is cool after watching this. It's dirty self-serving vagrant stuff. The guy who I'm guessing was supposed to be Kobain acts depressed, crazy, selfish, and rude. I watched some real interviews of Kobain, and even if it were his last days on heroin and mind melted, it's insulting to make him seem stupid and jacked off like this movie did. Kobain was far from it. So, it's not accurate in any shape or form. They just used the film name, setting and character as a ripoff to sell product. If I were the estate, I'd sue. I wrote this review because that's how bad I felt this movie was even though it's old now and there are like 265 other reviews. I guess a lot of people think this is a masterpiece because of the director. He was having a bad year when he set this movie up, because it's tripe. Good luck if you want to give it a look. There are maybe two songs in it that are mildly worth listening to. (Add Note: People who loved this movie and possibly see my review, and think I didn't get it. I got it. An hour plus movie to show someone lost in their own fame, and the degradation of their soul could have been 15 minutes long. If this was supposed to be even loosely the man, or any man for that matter, who was supposed to be the voice of a generation...God help us).
mercuryix2003 ......are the only two words that apply to this film. It can only be called a film because that was the medium it was shot in. We will never know what was in Gus Van Sant's mind when he made this movie, and that may be his private joke; because he may very well have had nothing in mind when he made it. The film is a detached view of the last days of a self-indulgent, unaware drug addict, so detached that it might have been shot with a security camera affixed to the wall as it watches a man stumble around, ignore his friends, stumble around, ignore his family, stumble around, listen to a Jehova's Witness try to convert him as he sits there totally tuned out, stumble around, hide from a detective trying to find him, stumble around, wander into a potting shed, stumble around, and die. I have just given you the entire plot of Last Days, but did not give a "spoiler alert", as there is no plot, action or dialog to spoil. If a friend wanted to show you a security video of the last eight hours of a homeless drug addict's life in an alley before he slowly dies in front of you, would you watch it? I actually would, rather than watch this again. Because at least I would be watching a real life and death event, without the suffocating pretentiousness of this film.On top of that, we can't forget that we are watching the pointless and self-indulgent destruction of a millionaire who had far more success than he deserved, was overrated to an embarrassing degree, was more narcissistic than was previously thought humanly possible, and had friends, family and a wife who loved him far more than he deserved. In his own suicide note, Cobain referred to himself as a big baby. At least he was self aware to that degree. His mother after his death said "now he's gone and joined that stupid club". (Referring to the death of Jimmy Hendrix and Joplin by drug overdose, at age 28). His mother had more meaning, depth and insight in her life than her son ever did. Who cares about his life, he wasted it, and who cares about his death, as he didn't care about whoever cared about him? That is the feeling this film leaves in you; though I'm not sure Gus Van Sant cared about any meaning or effect this film had. Finally, who cares about this film? Its subject had no meaning and nothing to say, and neither does this. If you somehow think Kurt Cobain was a "genius" of some kind, and that his death at a young age had some kind of deep meaning, please, please consider a better role model. (And no, Marilyn Manson is not a better role model. At least Cobain wasn't That pathetic.....)
dragokin There are pros and cons to docudrama. Gus Van Sant used and misused this approach in Last Days and created a haunting atmosphere. In the long run, it became demanding to watch, not because of adult content or obscenities but exactly because this was a docudrama.Since we all know who this movie was about, it is amazing to see how lawyers influenced Last Days. Apparently a lot of people were unhappy about the plot, so all reference to Kurt Cobain and events surrounding his death have been removed. Still the main character is spitting image of Kurt Cobain and the events depicted correspond to what we've heard from the media. But even without these impressions, Last Days is not something you could watch an enjoy. At times it hasn't been a drama but rather a documentary without much going on, yet this "nothing" got shown in great length. There was some reference to drug use, but even that has only been hinted. Despite the atmosphere that built up, we weren't smarter after the movie. We still only know what media told us about the death of Kurt Cobain.
rbk102750-1 Beside being trite and a story line too often used, the chromatography was a complete bore. It tried way to be hard to be ultra artistic instead of trying hard to help tell the story. From the ultra slow pans around the actors to the too often used window reflections to the fade out blur...OMG it was so boring I could hardly stand to watch it.Now I will take the rest of the review to waste even more of your time trying to meet the ridiculous and arbitrary minimum 10 line review requirement of IMDb. Really, you guys should know better than anyone not ever movie deserves a 10 line review.if you decide to watch this movie, Please, please don't pay any money to do so...You will feel ripped off.
