Merrily We Live Audience Reviews

Perry Kate Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
Glimmerubro It is not deep, but it is fun to watch. It does have a bit more of an edge to it than other similar films.
Juana what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Raymond Sierra The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
jrothenbuecher I, too see a tremendous resemblance to Our Man Godfrey. Funny, wacky movie. Enjoy.
weezeralfalfa Starts off with a pleasant bouncy theme song. For those who remember the 1936 film "My Man Godfrey", this 1938 film will seem like deja vu. The many parallels are striking enough to consider it a remake. However, it's supposed to be a remake of the 1930 film "What a Man". The main male character even has the same name in both films. Thus, should "My Man Godfrey" also be considered a remake of "What a Man"? Officially, it was based on a novel, and would be remade under the same title in 1957. Obviously, the plot of one or more vagrants being adopted by an eccentric wealthy family had been recognized more than once for its comedic potential, as well as a possible vehicle for social commentary. Of these 4 films, I've only seen this one plus the '36 "My Man Godfrey" The details and personalities are sufficiently different to make both worthwhile watches. In comparing the respective actors of the two films, William Powell, as Godfrey, probably has a slight edge over Brian Aherne, as the vagrant Wade Rawlins. To me, Carol Lombard is more entertaining than Constance Bennett, as the older sister, who develops a crush on the vagabond. As the father, Clarence Kolb is very funny, more so than Eugene Palette, in "My Man Godfrey". Likewise, Billie Burke of the present film clearly is more entertaining as the mother than is Alice Brady of the prior film. Impish 15 y.o. Bonita Granville is very funny, more so than the other sister in "My Man Godfrey". The present film also sports 2 large dogs: 'Get off the rug' and 'You Too' who sometimes interact in the scene. There is one character, played by Willie Best, I wish had been left out. He epitomizes the stereotypical supremely lazy, superstitious, and empty headed image of African Americans that Hollywood sometimes promoted....Ann Dvorak plays the amorous daughter of the senator, who immediately corners the handsome butler/ chauffeur vagabond and serves as competition with the 2 sisters for his romantic attention. Inexplicably, she soon disappears from the story...Alan Mowbray served as the main Butler, and sometimes is funny. Patsy Kelly is the chief cook.I was very surprised to discover this charming romantic comedy at YouTube. I think it is much less remembered than "My Man Godfrey" because the latter film 'got there first', and because the two main characters of "My Man Godfrey" are somewhat more interesting, although most of the supporting actors are less interesting.See it, along with "My Man Godfrey", at YouTube.
Al Westerfield This may well be the funniest movie ever made. My wife and I laughed out load dozens of time while watching it. Clarence Kolb steals the film with his pratfalls - at 64 years old! Alan Mowbray comes close to matching Kolb with his chimes and resignations. The rest of the family are superb. Bonita Granville shines as the hyper active teenager. Billie Burke was never dizzier. Aherne and Bennett make a great couple, fighting hard not to fall in love. The byplay among this great cast is funny and silly but also rings true. I guess there's a little of them in every family. My only regret is that Marjorie Rambeau, a personal favorite, must have had something to say at the party but her lines must have wound up on the cutting room floor. This is a film to enjoy frequently, particularly when you're feeling a bit down. A forgotten treasure.
Neil Doyle I can't believe all of these rave comments on what is essentially a screwball comedy that lacks the magic of other such items made during the '30s. This one is decidedly less successful than OUR MAN GODFREY or HARD TO GET (Dick Powell/Olivia de Havilland) or even FOUR'S A CROWD.Once again, it takes potshots at the rich--specifically BILLIE BURKE who is head of a loony household. She's a wealthy woman who hires hobos or ex-cons to run her estate, never listening long enough to anyone who might have described their situation--but then, there would be no story.Such is the case with BRIAN AHERNE who shows up at her doorstep to report a car accident but is soon swept into the household and hired as a chauffeur. CONSTANCE BENNETT is Burke's lovely daughter so we know where this plot device is going.BONITA GRANVILLE has another one of her bratty roles to play as she torments butler ALAN MOBRAY. She specialized in these roles but becomes irritating pretty fast. The silliness of the whole story goes into overdrive, milking every situation for whatever laughs can be derived from such exaggerated screwball material. By the time it's over, you're either having a ball at the expense of this loony family or judging the film to be excessively over baked nonsense that hardly stands up to close inspection. You know which side I'm on.Summing up: Predictable screwball mess, it wastes the talents of a fine cast.
