During the invasion of Normandy the photograph of a slim Korean man in German uniform was found. It transpired that the man had served as a soldier in the Japanese, Russian and German armies. His incredible story inspired director Kang Je-Gyu to create this epic war drama.

Maidgethma Wonderfully offbeat film!
Executscan Expected more
Claysaba Excellent, Without a doubt!!
Kien Navarro Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
denis888 This is the third KOrean war movie that I have watched in a short while, two other being Brotherhood Of War and The Front Line, but these were about Korean War, and this new one is about a bigger time span, from 1930's and to 1948, and it follows the fate of two marathon runners, one Korean and one Japanese, being involved into the horror of WWII and all in different front fields - in China, Russia and France. I need not to retell the huge epic story, I just want to admit that the film is a great winner, with correct depictions of various nations, and moments, and yeah, they all speak languages correct, I am Russian and was very pleased to hear correct Russian speech throughout. THe video effects are excellent here, and yeah, despite several goofs and incorrect details, such as Soviet army actions in Mongolia, the movie is a good and very deep serious treat and leaves much to be thinking about. Recommended to all history buffs
ash-47 The plot of this is quite childish and straightforward - you can guess how the story will be developed quite easy. Everything in film is exaggerated- feelings, personal emotions, cruelty, explosions. Of course it's impossible to speak about historical truth through the film's prism - it's all complete mess. There are multiple mistakes with geography, wear, usage of alphabet and so on. But it's even worse - this film leaves an impression, that the most humanistic combatants were Nazis. Two main heroes spent pleasant time in German Army with maximum comfort and most humanistic relationships between soldiers. My conclusion: it's quite weak compilation of clichės with a lot of factual errors and wrong misinterpretation of historical facts. Save your time, money and most important your brains from this rubbish stuff.
Pripyat Black A This movie is far better than Saving Private Ryan (know as best war movie). This movie is like Unbroken but came out like 3-4 years before and with much more action. This movies shows the more details and points of view than any other war movie I've seen. This movies was so impressive that I actually did a review. After watching this movie (with 10 other people, who also liked it) it quickly became my favorite war film. The film is long and interesting.Good- detailed, interesting, good story, good acting, realistic, full of action, foreign languages are understandable if you speak them...ext..Bad-sometimes shaky action or hard to ell who is who, watched with subtitles since not in English. The bad of this movies can be ignored. I will watch it again. This movie is underrated mostly because it is foreign movie. If you are a real fan of ww2 movies and would watch with subtitles (unless you find an English version) then this should be your first choice.--- this movies inspired me to look for movie Korean movies.
Michael Whitt First of all, I am absolutely in shock that the ratings for this film are so low. Especially the metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes reviews; they usually are able to decipher an amazing movie from a shamble. Moving on. The story of the movie is, bar none, without a doubt, one of the absolute best in the last 50 years of war movies. For those who know little about the Korean part in the Imperial Army, many Koreans were forced to fight for the Japanese Army. Those caught in unfortunate situations, those who lived in Japan at the time, and also prisoners. This movie takes a strong jab at the WWII movie genre and ends up as a personal favorite, definitely my favorite war film released in the last decade. The plot is vicious, but well-rounded, emotional, and also generally historically accurate. The special effects are in-par with any blockbuster that had an enormous budget. However, probably due to technological advances in the last decade, I feel as if the money is well-spent. The effects aren't OVERLY done, yet capture many horrors of war. The story doesn't dwell on death, and shows promise of life, which is a rare balance to maintain. This movie will make you feel for the characters. The protagonists and the antagonists are developed very well, as expected from a 2+ hour movie. Seeing a movie about WWII that isn't made in the Western world is rare. Seeing one that is done VERY WELL, and that isn't propaganda or incredibly biased, and that has an AMAZING story that is easy to follow is a masterpiece, and this one falls nothing short of one. Lastly, I have been seeing reviews and comments about "they didn't like it because it was hard to follow".... In regards to that, as long as you can read, or understand the languages, you can ignore everyone else saying it's hard to understand.....As it is a foreign film with foreign names, you must pay attention to really understand all of the pieces involved, and if you can't pay attention long enough to understand the dialogue (i.e. not checking your phone and missing three sentences of speech), you shouldn't be critiquing a movie or providing a review. I absolutely love this film and would recommend it to anyone that enjoys foreign films, war movies, or hardcore dramas. 95/100
