He & She is an American sitcom that aired on the CBS television network as part of its 1967-1968 lineup, originally sponsored by General Foods and Lever Brothers. He & She is widely considered to be ahead of its time by broadcast historians. Its sophisticated approach to comedy was viewed as opening doors to the groundbreaking MTM family of sitcoms of the 1970s, beginning with The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970. The character of Oscar was openly the pattern for the Ted Baxter character, for which creator Leonard Stern granted permission. CBS aired reruns of He & She in prime time from June 1970 to September 1970.

He & She Audience Reviews

Perry Kate Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
TaryBiggBall It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.
Candida It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
John Hedtke I was 11 when this show was on. I recall my mother being very fond of it and encouraging me to watch it because of (I think) Jack Cassidy in particular, though she was fond of the whole cast. I can still recall great swathes of dialog from this show, which proves that it was dazzlingly funny and that I clearly watch too much TV. :) The episode where they think everyone's been poisoned (Kenneth Mars: "Dick, I took to the hospital a *stiff* *CAT*!"), or when Dick and friends went up to the cabin and had already been driven crazy by Hamilton Camp, and **SPOILER ALERT JUST IN CASE** body-Englishing--unsuccessfully--the starter on Hamilton Camp's car and having everyone come home after a week with beards (Camp: "Mistuh Hollistuh, when you shave it off, you want to be sure to use an electric razuh." Dick: "Why?" Camp: "Because the pipes ah turned off and theyuh's no hot watuh!" Dick grabbed the goldfish bowl). Kenneth Mars reading a book when Dick and Paula want to sneak out ("Whatcha reading?" "'War and Peace'." "Where are you?" "Page 17."). And on and on and on....The show was vastly, amazingly funny. I've not seen it since it was on, yet I can remember a considerable number of the scenes and dialog. I'm very sorry that it wasn't continued because it was bloody brilliant. And writing this, I realize how very much I miss it. :(
cdevos-1 I was 14 when this show came on TV and after all these years I have never forgotten how fantastic it was. Jack Cassidy was superb as the utterly self-adoring actor who played "Jetman." Paula Prentiss portrayed, I believe, an airline stewardess, as they called them back then. Kenneth Mars was a fireman who would cross over into Dick and Paula's apartment via a plank between the fire station and their living room. Hamilton Camp played the building superintendent. I can't remember a single episode in detail but I do remember how enchanting it was to see a married couple, obviously crazy about each other, surrounded by friends of a seriously kooky persuasion. I am glad that someone else besides myself remembers this show!
k7no The fit of the characters was perfect. Cassidy was smarmy and Hamilton Camp was...Camp. Each great at working off of the other characters. I always believed it was waaaay ahead of its time and a bit too hip for the times.
timmauk I was only 9 when this was on but I remember it very well. It was one of those true comedies that just flowed so well and was funny naturally. I mean that it is like "Mad about You" in that it got it's humour from real life married situations. One of first true universal comedies on TV.The chemistry between real life husband & wife Richard Benjaman and Paula Prentiss is a marvel to watch. Then you add in a cast of characters, leading off with the hilarious Jack Cassidy (father of David) and you get a classic sitcom that for some stupid reason did not get renewed for a second season. WHY NOT??EMMY nominated for Best Actor In A Comedy-Benjaman, Best Actress In A Comedy-Prentiss, Best Supporting Actor In A Comedy-Cassidy and two Best Comedy Writing Emmys(got one).It would not have been nominated if it wasn't good people. I only hope that I get the chance, as well as others, to see it once again and it get the praise it deserves. Definitely ahead of it's time. WATCH IT!!
