Forever Mine Audience Reviews

Diagonaldi Very well executed
MoPoshy Absolutely brilliant
Comwayon A Disappointing Continuation
Siflutter It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
Wizard-8 In a number of aspects, "Forever Mine" is a really strange movie. On one hand it seems to be a modern update of the noir genre, dealing with forbidden romance and other related topics. But a great deal of the movie also seems to be inspired by the Alexander Dumas novel "The Count of Monte Cristo"! As you can probably imagine, the two parts don't really fit well together. Yet at the same time, the mix makes the movie so strange that more likely than not you'll keep watching to see how it gets wrapped up. I certainly was curious enough. That is not to say that the movie is missing genuine merit. It's well photographed, has some good performances, and it has a lush musical score. However, the movie doesn't work in the end. The limited budget hurts the movie at times, and the so-called "hero" isn't very sympathetic. But what really dooms the movie is that the story is too long, too slow, and lacking in explanation on a few key details. Yet while the movie doesn't work in the end, the movie remains weirdly watchable - that is, if you share this user commenter's taste for strange cinema.
Desertman84 Forever Mine is a noir film that stars Joseph Fiennes, Gretchen Mol and Ray Liotta. It is about two stories about a young cabana boy working at an opulent beach hotel that falls in love with Ellen, the wife of business mogul. It was written and directed by Paul Schrader. This film happens to be a modern-day crime story. A horribly disfigured man named Manuel Esquema is called upon to help out Mark Brice, a former city councilman in a wealthy New York community. Brice has been accused of some serious financial irregularities, and Esquema is the sort of "fixer" who might be able to make his problems go away. Mark, however, doesn't recognize Esquema as the former Alan Ripley, who was working as a towel boy at the Florida resort where Mark and his wife Ella were honeymooning shortly after their marriage. Alan became obsessed with Ella the moment he saw her, and before long the two were engaged in a torrid affair. Ripley urged Ella to leave Mark for him, but she refused; Ripley followed them to New York, and when Ella eventually confessed her infidelity to Mark, he responded by shooting off half of Alan's face. Alan survives and builds a new sinister life for himself, but when Mark hires Esquema to help him, the former Alan's obsession with Ella blooms anew. The movie has definitely misused the its talented cast in Mol,Fiennes and Liotta. Also, the story is clichéd and predictable whose story does not come up with something original nor satisfying. Also, the characters involved lacked depth and emotion as they were bland all throughout the film.In the end, only the gratifying sex scene between Fiennes and Mol will keep the viewer into watching this film.
Christopher jones This is one of those features that played late at night on HBO, so I figured I would watch since I like Joseph Fiennes and Ray Liotta. I'd never have paid to see it, given the plot summary, but I was very impressed with this pot boiler of a love triangle. It is a definite case of style over substance, but the plot remains plausible enough for those who are true romantics and who feel that those truly destined for one another will go to great lengths to be together. I must admit that the facial scarring of a primary character should not have been enough to fool those close to him, but beyond that I had no problem with the assumed identity device. On a lighter note, I have to say that Gretchen Mol looks sensational here. How much so? I 'bat for the other team,' yet noticed that Ms. Mol's breasts looked exquisite in the tasteful semi-nude scenes. I can see why her character was pursued so authentically by Fiennes throughout the feature. If you liked the original 'Postman Always Rings Twice,' this is a good companion piece.
MrGKB ...from an otherwise top-notch writer/director who must have been on one serious bender or another to create something so remarkably mundane, despite some nice work from Gretchen "The Notorious Bettie Page" Mol as Ella, the romantic focus of this half-baked bodice-ripper, and Ray "Goodfellas" Liotta, as the stereotypical shady, possessive, violent husband. Unfortunately, it also features Joseph "Shakespeare in Love" Fiennes taking a paycheck with his eyebrows as the passionate Miami cabana boy who's fallen for Ella and swears undying, smoldering devotion. Everything goes downhill from there, including some of the worst aging and make-up effects I've seen in a feature film in some time. Small wonder it never made it into theaters; I'm sure test audiences roasted it! Of interest only to fans of Mol, who demonstrates the ease with nudity that landed her the titular role in Mary Harmon's classy-but-sassy bio-pic, "The Notorious Bettie Page," or maybe dedicated Liotta followers or Fiennes groupies who can't get enough of their boy. Cinemaphiles will otherwise find nothing of interest to retain in their memory banks. A watch-once DVD, unless maybe you want to hear Schrader's commentary, which so far I haven't and very likely never will. Earns its 5/10 from me strictly on Ms. Mol's charms and precious little else.
