Last of the Living Audience Reviews

Sexyloutak Absolutely the worst movie.
DubyaHan The movie is wildly uneven but lively and timely - in its own surreal way
Jonah Abbott There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
Darin One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
Leofwine_draca LAST OF THE LIVING is an ultra-cheap zombie comedy in which a group of slackers go around and bump off members of the living dead in the wake of an apocalypse. Yes, it's a cheap derivative of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, made without any of the laughs, the wit, the gore, or indeed the technical prowess of the film-makers. And this is from a guy who doesn't even particularly like SHAUN OF THE DEAD.LAST OF THE LIVING is a Kiwi film although it's a far cry from the solid genre fare that used to come out of New Zealand - Peter Jackson's BRAINDEAD being a shining example. The whole thing is so cheap it looks like it was filmed on somebody's video camera with a group of buddies (and non-actors) standing in for the fellow cast members. There's not a single funny moment throughout the lengthy running time, and by the time we reach the end I was feeling extremely frustrated at having sat through a film so lacking in originality, a film without a single thing to say or distinguish itself from anything else in the over-crowded sub-genre of film-making.
elizabethtwist We got this film as part of a collection of low-budget horror, "Masters of Terror," and were all set to laugh at the badness. Last of the Living was a great surprise. The plot is well constructed, and the four leads are charming and engaging. I'm not quite sure how to explain this, but the main plot - zombie apocalypse, a desperate ploy to get to a centrifuge(?) is nothing we haven't seen before. It's the little things that make a difference: the characters' back stories, the detail about why there are no bullets left, the way the characters interact with each other, and the fact that the main crisis is conflict between friends, not the zombie apocalypse - all these factors make this worth a viewing. For those who like combat there are some decent fight set pieces. Plus the soundtrack is the sex bob-omb. For what it is, Last of the Living is good fun.
Josh Anderson I grabbed this movie off the shelf because of the kick ass cover art. It gave the movie a quality look but it no more into a minute of the first scene of the "couch potatoes" and it was evident this movie was filmed on a home video camera. It's strange how they actually had decent sound design on the one hand but on the other hand I feel like they just used the built in mic on their mini-DV cam to capture all the dialog. I'm an American, and while I thoroughly enjoy foreign film, the New Zealand accents were so thick it was, at times, difficult to understand the characters. As far as a zombie flick goes, this movie brought nothing new to the table and seemed like some dudes just copying zombie movies they've seen before. The zombies weren't scary and easy defeated with...a golf club? Things I did like: the heroine was cute and their car was pretty bad ass. It's too bad they didn't film the entire movie the same way they filmed the ending music video...it actually had some quality. Don't let the statement on the cover about being better than Shaun of the Dead fool you. This movie is not even close to the same class in quality, plot or humor as Shaun of the Dead.
Tommy Dip When I first heard of the movie with elements of horror and comedy, I thought this would be an enjoyable "Shawn of the Dead" kind of zombie flick. But no, it is pretty much a terrible movie. The plot is pretty much missing for the first third of the movie. Three couch potatoes somehow manage through the zombie apocalypse and are living in a mansion doing nothing but goofing off. They also don't even take the whole situation seriously, they treat it as a joke. Furthermore there are almost no zombies throughout the whole movie. There are literally only about 50. Later on they meet a girl named Stiff where suddenly a plot surfaces about taking a sample of the undead's blood to find a cure. Then the 3 males only want to help her because they all want to impress her, very cliché. Dumb jokes, bad acting, stupid dialogue, terrible special effects and atrocious ending make it a bad movie. But that's not to say i did not enjoy the movie. Yes, I just complained about almost all aspects of the film. However I watched this with my friends on a late Friday night and we had a fun time. The jokes and special effects are very amateur but that's what made us laugh. It's so bad it's funny! So grab some friends, pop some popcorn and don't expect much and you should have an enjoyable hour and a half. Four out of 10 stars.
