Law of Desire Audience Reviews

Solemplex To me, this movie is perfection.
Arianna Moses Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Portia Hilton Blistering performances.
Kimball Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Jay Harris Pedro Almodavar today is considered one of the major directors & screenplay and story writers.Law & Desire was only his sixth film effort. This early effort (1987) was & still is an ADULT NC 17 rated film. The sex scenes between the 2 MALE stars are very hot & steamy. The director is known for his very explicit sex scenes both 'hetero & homo', They are always done in good taste, I wish some other directors in current films would show such good taste & edit there steamy sex scenes in the same way that Almovadar does.Euserbio Ponsela & Carmen Maura star as brother and sister. He is a film director who has a penchant for other males. One of which is Antonio Bandaras, both actors are very handsome etc.We all know that Antonio now is one of Hollywood's big stars. Euserbio never made a Hollywood film BUt still is a name performer in Spain.Carmen Maura was & still is an international STAR of high caliber. The film is a murder mystery as well.Almodavar's more recent film are of a much higher caliber, This however is a first rate very well acted & made film.Ratings: *** (out of 4) 87 points (out of 100) IMDb 8 (out of 10)
Bloom6000 I first saw snippets of this film ages ago and finally saw the whole film. Prior to watching this film, I've read countless hyped-up, mixed reviews over it. People say it's a great comedy, others say it's a kinky, perverted piece of work. I guess when this film was released in 1986, people didn't know what to make of it. And now after seeing this film, I don't blame them.I watched this film originally expecting a thriller. It has some thriller elements in it, especially towards the end, but the main plot - a gay film director pursued by a psychopath - is often overshadowed by the quite inappropriate story of the director's "sister" and her struggle to raise an ex-lover's daughter. You can see here a young Antonio Banderas as the 'baddie' of this film. Apparantely this was the first film where Antonio performs very hot sex scenes with another male actor. So is the film good? Yes... only if you're a fan of any of the cast, or of the director, or of dark kinky Spainish films in general. What are the flaws?... well there aren't any that I can pick out. It's a decent film with decent directing. Nothing to get too excited over.Perfect to watch on a quiet Saturday night.
futurehaus As you see from the other users' comments (the ones who liked the film, I mean), the director likes reinventing themes from previous movies. The links are a great insight into what he had wished to convey in his earlier works but hadn't quite fully expressed. It was the same for Ansel Adams, whose most popular work was actually reissues of his older photos, but with different photo exposures and significantly more dramatic contrast. I've loved watching Almodovar's tastes refine through the years (it could be argued that John Waters followed the same artistic maturation at roughly the same time). If you can, please watch this film with Spanish-speaking friends. There's just too much for the subtitles to convey, and you're missing out on facial expressions and backgrounds if your eyes are glued to the subtitles."Antonio, abre la puerta!" (sound of fan flinging)
bilahn This is my first Almodavar film. I'll confess we chose it mainly because we knew this had the enticing prospect of Antonio Banderas in gay sex scenes. Unfortunately, that is about all that this film has to recommend it. I consider myself a fairly sophisticated viewer, I like European films, "art" films, and I am generally able to recognize a quality film even if it is not to my particular taste. But this film was a complete blank to me. The plot was ridiculous, the characters lifeless, the box called it a "hilarious comedy" but I didn't laugh once. Loosly and awkwardly constructed, with a lot of pointless dialogue. I don't get this at all-- it seems like an amateurish effort. Can someone enlighten me?
