Man's Favorite Sport? Audience Reviews

Solemplex To me, this movie is perfection.
Stometer Save your money for something good and enjoyable
Fatma Suarez The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful
Lela The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
ebiros2 Despite the title, and the opening of the movie that hints at men going for good looking women, there're very few girls on this movie. In fact the movie is awkward, and tries to be funny, but fails. The woman Rock Hudson gets involved with is rather an inconsiderate individual. This combined with the not so interesting plot and supporting characters, makes this movie a disappointment. The title of the movie hints at a flamboyant playboy going after many women, but the character played by Rock Hudson is nice but rather inept individual, and the women that appeared in the opening scene were lot better looking than Paula Prentiss. Prentiss looked much better in the Stepford Wives.Despite the good title, this movie fails in many details, and is not one of the better movies Rock Hudson starred in, or a good movie from that era.One thing that was interesting is that the streets of San Francisco looks pretty much the way it looks today, and hasn't changed much in 50 years.
JasparLamarCrabb A very funny movie from Howard Hawks. It's a throwback to the screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s with Rock Hudson as a fishing "expert" roped into entering a fishing contest by loony PR woman Paula Prentiss. It turns out that Hudson is an expert on paper, having never even been near a lake, never mind having fished in one. It's all very goofy, fast paced and there's great chemistry between uptight Hudson and free-spirited Prentiss (who attempts to teach Hudson how to fish in some of the oddest ways). It's studio-bound to be sure, but it's stylish fun and features a very good supporting cast including John McGiver as Hudson's boss, Norman Alden (nearly stealing the film as John Screaming Eagle) and the fetching Maria Perschy as "Easy." The great music score is by Henry Mancini.
Django6924 Some reviewers have criticized the studio-bound look (Bringing Up Baby wasn't???), flat, high- key photography, the fact Rock Hudson isn't Cary Grant, that much of the comedy is slapstick (which, I guess, means physical and visual), that gags are recycled from older films......I mean, who cares? This is a total delight, probably the best comic roles Prentiss and Hudson ever had, and one of the funniest post World War 2 movies of all. Today, the 6th or 7th time I've seen it, I found when it was over I wanted to go out and buy a DVD of it.Hawks' films may not have the pictorial qualities that Ford's, Welles', and Hitchcock's had, but when it came to involving you in a group of characters and their silly, yet somehow believable, antics, he had no superiors. It's not surprising it took the French New Wave, with their impatience for tired and predictable dramatic conventions, to finally recognize and rank Hawks at the very highest level of film artists.
Herowithgreeneyesandblue Only read the first paragraph if you don't want to read about the storyline. As funny as it gets. A screwball comedy with believable characters. Rock Hudson's character writes instructional fishing manuals but has never been fishing and doesn't know a hook from a sinker. Of course the time comes where he is invited to a fishing competition in which his bosses ego and personal reputation is at stake (and Rock's job). So he goes out to the fishing competition with one ridiculous thing happening after another. The big fish jumps into his boat and he wins the competition. The second story going on is this "triple A" chick who is played by Paula Prentiss and it's just as funny as the fishing part. More ridiculous dramas occur between them, Rock loses his fiancé' due to hilarious misunderstandings, falls in love with Paula Prentiss, and a happy ending. It's all a fun, immature fantasy. Rock Hudson played great, friendly, but masculine male roles, Paula Prentiss is hot and endearing and who couldn't fall in love with her? I sure did.
