Scott LeBrun The story twists, acting, and direction make a difference in this superior entry among Hammer Studios' series of black & white psychological thrillers. Bette Davis plays the titular character, working for a family that includes an often absent father, Bill (James Villiers), an unstable mother, Virginia (Wendy Craig), and a bratty son, Joey (William Dix). Joey's spent some time away and is just now returning home. For whatever reason, he *really* doesn't like the nanny, and makes this quite clear. It's got something to do with the death of Joey's kid sister Susy (Angharad Aubrey).Hammer veteran Jimmy Sangster scripted, from the novel by Evelyn Piper, and also produced. Seth Holt directs with a sure hand. Davis does some wonderfully understated work, while young Dix delivers an engaging performance. As this story plays out and the revelations occur, one realizes that both the Nanny and Joey can be considered sympathetic characters. In fact, all of the characters command ones' attention, with Pamela Franklin doing well as a neighbour who becomes Joey's confidante. And Jill Bennett is superb as the weary Aunt Pen, who has to be careful not to exert herself or get excited due to a weak heart. Jack Watling, Maurice Denham, and Alfred Burke are excellent in support.Richard Rodney Bennett composed the affecting music score; Harry Waxman did the crisp b&w cinematography. The film is very well made and the story very well told.Eight out of 10.

bkoganbing Although she did have other and good roles in her last three decades, it seems that after Whatever Happened To Baby Jane, Bette Davis was forever trapped in the horror/fright genre where all good actresses of the studio era seemed to gravitate. No one gravitated more than Bette Davis.Hammer Film, British horror specialists signed Davis for The Nanny. It's the day of the arrival home of William Dix the young son of James Villiers and Wendy Craig. It seems as though a few years back young Dix drowned his sister in a bathtub. He swears that it was The Nanny who did it. But everyone took Davis's word over a child. I'm also not understanding why if one kid was dead and one was in a psychiatric facility there was a need to keep a Nanny employed.Why Dix was let out is a mystery to me since he was completely incorrigible in his incarceration. Maybe they needed bed space. When he gets home Dix really acts out hostility toward Davis.What did happen to the little sister? There are as Catholic doctrine tells us sins of omission and sins of commission. Davis was guilty of a sin of omission but the results were fatal. The fright part of this is that you never know until the end what really happened and just how to parse out the guilt. The Nanny is an all right piece of fright work from Hammer. It will never be rated as a top Bette Davis film.

Secrets will out...A psychological thriller of some substance from Hammer Film Productions, The Nanny thrives on deft story telling and acting of quality from Bette Davis.There's a slight annoyance that the mystery element of the story struggles to command interest, because the title of the film kind of tells us what is wrong in the Fane household equation, but the constant battle between young Joey (Dix excellent as a kid being stubborn and aggressive, but alienated) and Nanny Bette is riveting.Holt builds the core of the story patiently, the Fane house is a fraught place, Craig's mom is perched on the edge of a break down, Villiers' papa a stiff backed type not nearly at home enough and emotionally cut off from the worries of his wife and child. Hovering over them all is Nanny, smoothly weaving about them, holding sway with an unnerving calmness, it's a calm before the storm scenario and once the truths come tumbling out the best impact has been garnered due to the unfussy and unhurried work of the production team.Filmed suitably in black and white and primarily shot in the confines of one home, picture has atmosphere and oppressive feeling in abundance. The lack of that mystery intrigue, and a less than barn storming finale, stop it from being in the top tier of the Hammer-Psycho-Chiller list, but it's easy film to recommend to fans of the genre and especially to fans of the irrepressible Madame Davis. 7.5/10

wes-connors A neat psychological study with heavily browed Bette Davis (as Nanny) prepared for the return of ten-year-old William Dix (as Joey Fane), after two years in an institution for the emotionally disturbed. The boy supposedly drowned his little sister in the bathtub, but Dix swears Ms. Davis was responsible. When you see Davis' marvelously perverse "Mary Poppins" demeanor, you'll understand why. Dix thinks he's next on her hit list. Distraught mother Wendy Craig (as Virgie) and father James Villiers (as Bill) side with Davis. Dix confides in teenage London apartment mate Pamela Franklin (as Bobbie).
