An American Ghost Story Audience Reviews

XoWizIama Excellent adaptation.
Dynamixor The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
Livestonth I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible
Freeman This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
tapho2211 I'm not sure why this has a low vote on IMDb. If you're looking for horror, demons, scary faces, and gore, this is NOT the movie for you. I'm always looking for good ghost movies and they are hard to find. I'm not a fan of pure gore, demon, possession type movies. I just want a good scary ghost story (eg 1980 movie "The Changeling"). As others have said, the production value is a bit low, but it doesn't really detract from the film too much. It's got some genuine creepy scenes. Overall, the people in the film weren't making stupid choices, being irrational, or overly dramatic. They just seemed like regular people--which I liked. I gave it 7 out of 10 for three reasons:1. The lack of using the damn lights. Any person dealing with creepy ghost stuff would flick on the light switch and not use a flashlight the entire time. I know the creep factor goes up when you're in the dark, but it wasn't realistic to me and that kinda bugged me.2. The ghostly sheet towards the end of the movie was a little funny to be honest, but it was used in a unique way, so I'll let it pass without much of a complaint. I think it could have been shot better.3. It just needed some better production values.Overall, a nice little spooky ghost film that makes you feel a bit on edge and uneasy at times. :)
rexferal11-856-669191 Weary of slasher movies, gore just for the sake of gore, and bored with whizzo CGI effects just for the sake of whizzo CGI effects, I wanted to settle back to a simple, straight forward Ghost Story. One with a solid story line which, more or less, was neatly tethered to some level of reality and played out by reasonably decent actors. In spite of rather low ratings and a couple of mindless reviews, I decided to watch this movie. I stumbled onto an excellent choice! The script is well conceived, logical and moves along smoothly without needless twists and turns. The story, although not altogether original, is captivating and the acting... well, this gem is blessed with exceptionally good acting - not forced, in your face, nor over the top. The actors render natural and consistent portrayals. The film is suspenseful with plenty of scary moments. The music score alone is sufficient to keep you on edge while inflicting huge goose bumps. The cinematography is excellent overall. Ahh, 'tis a wonderful thing to indulge in a well made spooky movie! A must see for serious spook fans.
costumesbymyndee I really did not expect much out of this film, as I found Paranormal Activity boring and contrived. I was pleasantly surprised. The acting was very good. I never found myself rolling my eyes at the acting. I really felt the tension and genuine reactions. I expected pretty typical horror genre devises, but I am happy to say that the writers left me guessing. When I would guess that one thing would happen it would be something completely different and I found myself jumping, pretty often. Enjoyed the ending. Upon watching the extras and discovering that this was done with so few people and resources, I was even more impressed. Definitely worth the watch.
mknight388 I don't care if low-budget or not, this was the worst film I have ever seen. I am not a film maker but give me a camera and a few hundred dollars and I could put this film to shame. All I would have to do is buy some sheets and put some people under them as well as hire a couple of very over-the-top actors, then I would have a making for a hit over this garbage. I am sorry for being so negative but I need that part of my life back where I watched this landslide. There was no sympathy for the main characters which should be developed throughout the film in any horror/scary film. Actually I found it to be very comical as I watched them plod through their lines almost as if they were ready to bust out laughing at what they were doing. For aspiring film makers, watch this as a antidote of everything not to do in a film.
