Life in 1847 Paris is as spirited as champagne and as unforgiving as the gray morning after. In gambling dens and lavish soirees, men of means exert their wills and women turned courtesans exult in pleasure. One such woman is Marguerite Gautier, who begins a sumptuous romance with Armand Duval.

Camille Audience Reviews

AniInterview Sorry, this movie sucks
Kailansorac Clever, believable, and super fun to watch. It totally has replay value.
Abbigail Bush what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
Arianna Moses Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
ksf-2 Yikes. the Hollywood names don't get much bigger than this. Greta Garbo, at 31, Robert Taylor, Lionel Barrymore. and one of my favorites from the oldies.. .Jessie Ralph, who made those films with W.C. Fields. Margeurite (Garbo) meets two men at the opera, Duval (Taylor) and the Baron (Henry Daniell). Duval pursues her, but she is getting more and more ill, and spending all her time with the Baron. Her maid (Jessie Ralph), and her friend (Laura Crews) keep an eye on her in supporting roles. Written by Dumas, it's quite similar to Moulin Rouge, but that was a novel written by Pierre LaMure. Both stories are about a tug of war, where the girl can't decide between the rich Baron and the common guy. Lots of scheming, and talk about the proper thing to do. This one turns into a love story, with some humor and tragedy, sacrifice. again, similar to Moulin Rouge. It's quite good, although quite dated story-line. Lots of old fashioned themes, that would never fly today. But a good story of it's time.Directed by George Cukor, who will get an Oscar for My Fair Lady. Garbo only made a couple more films after this one. Unfortunately, Conquest and Two Faced Woman were both big failures, which is probably why she didn't make more films.
Hitchcoc This is based on the sentimental novel by Alexandre Dumas fils. It is the story of a courtesan who is being kept by a rich man. She lives in the early 1800's, a harsh time, and has pretty much all she wants--except true love. When the handsome Robert Taylor (Armand) comes along, she is willing to do anything for him. He feels the same way but it is dissuaded by his uncle because her past will ruin any prospects he has. Greta Garbo is Camille, playing the part to the hilt. She is another one of those fragile beings that made up her career. Everything is orchestrated to bring about the striking conclusion. Part of the problem is that this ending has been parodied so many times and is so gut wrenching, it's almost too much to watch. All the characters are handsome or pretty and the milieu of France is well crafted. But it really seems dated now.
Sameir Ali The amazing performance of Greta Garbo is just enough to watch this movie. We can see a sick, weak and beautiful lady as the protagonist. She was Oscar nominated for the Best Actress in a Leading Role. Camille is said to be the favorite movie of the actress. All other actors, Robert Taylor, Lionel Barrymore etc. are perfect in their cast.Director George Cukor has done a great job in making the movie a very interesting Romantic Drama. The movie will remain in your heart for ever.Camille is highly recommended for those who are looking for great movies.Sameir Ali
PWNYCNY This is a strong movie featuring outstanding performances by the entire cast. Robert Taylor performance is particularly noteworthy as well as is Henry Daniell's. Greta Garbo of course is wonderful. But this is Robert Taylor's movie. His performance is compelling, evocative, and powerful. He dominates the movie. And Henry Daniell is the perfect foil for Mr. Taylor as both men vie for the affections of a certain beautiful woman. The dialogue is snappy and the cinematography impressive. But those are secondary to the story which is dramatic without being becoming sentimental. The interaction between Garbo and Taylor and Daniell is intense and makes this movie one of the better works of drama.
